Full Name: Daniyyel Yashenel ben-Lailah
Significance of Name: Daniyyel is Hebrew for Daniel. Daniel was both a dreamer and an interpreter of dreams in the Tanakh, all of which need sleep in order to work. Yashenel is made up of two Hebrew words. Yashen is a verb meaning sleep. El means god. His middle name essentially means "Sleep God." ben-Lailah means child of the night. Hypnos was supposed to be Nyx's son and she was the night goddess.

Physical Appearance: By far, Daniel is no sex god. One look at him and most girls will think “geek” or “just a friend” material and move on to his more attractive counterparts, which is too bad because, honestly? Geeks try harder and treat their women like actual goddesses.
Daniel is almost 6’, being about half an inch short of being tall for his age. He’s a string-bean of a kid, being very skinny. He has a bit of muscle on him, but just enough to show he’s not quite a stick, more like a skinny tree, and not enough to show that he’s good in a fight. It comes from being slightly undernourished since, where he came from, food was a bit scarce and rice became a staple food in the ben-Lailah household. Generally, Joseph got the lion’s share of the nutrients both in and out of the womb, so Daniel has always been on the skinny side of life.
For growing up in Tel Aviv, Daniel is pale. His skin is a bit pasty, but, surprisingly, his Hebrew blood won’t let him burn in the sun. He just tends to sweat a lot. His brother is the one who got the tanning genes in the family. Come to think of it, Joseph got a lot of what Daniel didn’t.
Dan has a weirdly shaped head. It’s larger on top and then narrows down around his chin, giving people the impression that he has a big head. And he does. It makes him look perpetually fifteen. It also doesn’t help that his hair is an untamable rat’s nest of dark brown mess. His mother had lot since given up trying to make it do anything, so it grew wild like a weed growing up. Under his hair, Dan has two odd shaped birthmarks that were visible only as an infant. They looked a bit like wings. However, unless he were to shape his head, one would never know they were there.
Because of his sleeping issues, Dan looks tired. His eyes, which are kind of on the smallish side, tend to have the telltale signs of sleeplessness, giving his eyes a kind of purplish look around them. His eyes are brown and a bit dull as of late from a slew of anti-depressants and sleep aids. His nose is Israeli and his lips are on the sensuous side, though no one would know because they’re focusing on his big head.

Personality Description: Daniel is much quieter and considerably geekier than his twin brother. He loves comics and reading, learning new things and expanding his mind (in a non-LSD sort of way). He’s always been the planner, the thinker of the two, in addition to being the softer spoken and gentle. He has a sweet temperament, very kind and thoughtful. He’s generous even to the nastiest of people and has a firm ‘turn the other cheek’ policy. Seriously, you could punch the guy and he would take it. His ability might kick in involuntarily as a reflex, but he’s not the type to fight back. If he does, it’s as Joseph’s instigation, not his own.
Daniel can’t sleep. It’s ironic that a god of sleep has insomnia, but it’s true. He takes a number of sleeping medications to help him out, enough to kill a horse, essentially, but it’s rarely ever enough. His ability doesn’t work on himself and thus he’s doomed to see everyone else fall into a peaceful sleep while he stays up at all hours. It’s why he looks so sickly and pale.
Daniel is shy around girls. He’s quiet and respectful, but he holds women on a higher level than men and therefore often thinks himself not worthy of their attention. After his girlfriend split, he’s never been quite the same and considers himself unlovable.
Daniel is awkward too. As a gangly kid, he often gets himself into awkward situations unintentionally. He has a nervous laugh and messes with his hair a lot when he’s nervous. If he were to find a girl who could break through his awkward and timid shell, he’d treat her like a princess. One of the good things about geeky boys is that they try much harder than the pretty boys. Unfortunately, this is a lesson all mother try to teach their daughters, but it doesn’t take until much later.
He loves flying. If he could, he’d buy a plane and become a pilot. Unfortunately, his sleep deprivation won’t let him do so, so he just gets to watch planes from afar. Any fliers out there would be a welcome addition to him.

Power/Ability: Sleep/Lethargy Induction- While he's still working on the lethargy bit, Daniel can make people call asleep from a pretty good distance (not across the school, obviously, but pretty far). He can induce them into a dreamless state so that his brother Joseph and go to work. If he wanted too, he could keep them in that state forever, as it doesn't need his attention in order to keep a person asleep, just his own desire to wake the person up. However, he hates using his ability for no good reason, especially since he screwed his cousin over because of it. He's fairly powerful at this particular power just because he's been doing it so long, even longer than his twin has been doing dream manipulation. He can't use this ability on himself though. As a result, he's an insomniac.

History:
In 1993, Joseph and Daniel ben-Lailah were born to Nisiah ben-Lailah and an unnamed man. Whenever either boy asked about their father, Nisiah was relatively silent, shrugging it off and claiming that it wasn’t important. As a result, both boys were raised with Nisiah’s family. Nisiah had six sisters and four brothers, as well as her elderly father, leaving the twins wanting for nothing in the family department. All their aunts were supportive of each child respectively and their uncles made sure they grew into well-balanced young men. Mostly. Their grandfather, however, who was extremely old, was more of an oddity than anything else. Their father suffered from dementia and was a tad unpredictable at time. It became a game of both boys to see which one could cause grandpa to do something crazy first. Joseph usually won.
The boys were never lacking for playmates, either. They had a healthy mix of male and female cousins, giving them plenty of playmates. Often, both boys would play doctor with their female cousins as toddlers and learned that boys were quite different form girls. Daniel, the shyer of the two, would often cover his face and run out blushing when they played this game. Soon, their mother put a stop to it, instead explaining the facts of life herself as opposed to letting them figure it out for themselves. Plus, their aunts were less than happy about the twins’ curiosity.
Daniel and Joseph didn’t discover their abilities until they were three in September of 1996, during the Al-Aqsa tunnel riots. Someone had spread the rumor that the Israeli army had built an underground tunnel in order to weaken the foundations and destroy a local mosque. There was rioting in the streets and Nisiah had attempted to keep her boys inside. But, being the brave one that he was, Joseph insisted that they go outside to see what all the fuss was about. Daniel was staunchly against it, but had little choice since Joseph pretty much ran his life. After that, Daniel began to have sleeping problems, predominantly insomniaic ones. He was tired all the time, but couldn’t get past stage 3 in the sleep cycle. He kept it a secret from his family, but his body began to suffer for it, making him appear undernourished.
The chaos in the streets, as their family was very near the site, was overwhelming for the two small boys. They clung to the walls, hoping no one would notice them. But someone did. An extremist, seeing the two boys, began straight towards them. They didn’t know his intent, they just knew that he looked dangerous. Joseph held his younger brother back, trying to protect him, but something snapped in Daniel. Daniel tapped into the man’s brain. He’d later come to find out that he was manipulating the man’s neurotransmitters, telling him to instantly fall into a deep REM sleep, passing out on the floor. Joseph quickly ushered his younger brother back to their house, agreeing that this was his most terrible idea yet, considering they almost died. After the incident, Joseph wanted to explore Daniel’s ability some more. He made him fall asleep and wake up several times, curious about his brother’s ability. While his brother kept him asleep, Joseph found that he could manipulate his dreams. He could shape them however he wanted, going deep into a dream, making dreams within dreams, and similar such exploits. Upon waking, Joseph had Daniel put several people to sleep, including their grandfather, and Joseph was able to go into the old man’s dreams and play around with them, inserting ideas into his mind. Simple ones at first, though they later blossomed into much more complex dreams.
It wasn’t long before Joseph had the idea that they should use this ability to their own gain, form a kind of group that was able to con people based on what was inserted in their sleep. Daniel wasn’t happy with the idea. It was his job to put the person to sleep, to ‘kick’ them awake, and get their minds ready for the kinds of dreams Joseph was going to manipulate. To him, it felt a little like invasion of privacy, but he dutifully followed his brother. Soon, both boys were making a healthy killing off their abilities, creating complex worlds, making them seem as if reality. Daniel kept them asleep and ensured that they awoke from their various levels of dream state, while Joseph worked their dreams to his advantage. As the much most suave brother, Joseph easily got his way and the twins were quite successful.
Then, Daniel met a young woman named Sakinah, a Palestinian girl from, quite literally, across the border. They kept their attraction a secret due to the political issues of the time. Sakinah was a gorgeous girl and helped Daniel relax, helped him rest from his brother. Because Daniel himself had issues getting back stage 3 to REM sleep, Sakinah’s presence was welcome, helping him fall asleep. Countless times they fell asleep in each other’s arms. Eventually, one thing led to another and they, clumsily, lost their virginities to each other. He never told Joseph, since Joseph to this day remains a virgin and tries to keep it a secret since it embarrasses him. Daniel and Sakinah only made love four times, but each time was blissful for Daniel (he had no idea how Sakinah felt). He remembered each minute and kept them safe in his memories.
Daniel was happy with Sakinah and more than willing to take their romance out into the open. That idea was instantly crushed when their family found out a cousin of Daniel’s was in love with a Palestinian boy. Joseph, knowing what Daniel was capable of, told him to put the young man to sleep before something worse happened to him. Daniel didn’t want too, thinking of Sakinah the whole time. If he did this to the young man, what would happen when they found out about her? But, his loyalty to his family won out in the end. Daniel put the young man to sleep one night and Joseph locked the young man in his body through several layers of dreams, constantly waking from one just to end up in another. It was claimed that he slipped into a coma from an attack by an extremist. To a degree, they were right.
Daniel wasn’t the same afterwards. Sakinah was disappointed with her boyfriend, something he considered worse than her being angry. His inability to sleep became worse. Even Sakinah’s presence only put him into a very light cat-nap. Soon, his withdrawal became too much for Sakinah. She kissed him on the forehead and said goodbye to him for good. He still has his memories of his time with her. He then turned to hallucinogenic plants in order to help him sleep. His ability didn’t exactly work on himself.
Eventually, Joseph was able to slap some sense into him, by bugging him in his dreams, when he could catch him, to stop acting like a pussy. Daniel didn’t want to go back to their old job, Joseph did. The two were prepared to fight it out, but Pantheon called. The boys were found, saying they were gods of sleep. Daniel was Hypnos, the god of sleep and his brother Joseph was Morpheus, god of dreams. Their families, thrilled that they’d get a good education on a scholarship, were more than happy to send them off. So, Daniel followed his brother to Pantheon, hopped up on sleeping medications to help him sleep.
CONNECTION TO THE MYTH ' '
- Morpheus and Hypnos may have been the sons of Nyx alone and the twins were the sons of their mother with an unknown father.
- Morpheus and Hypnos had six aunts and four brothers, just like the twins.
- Their grandfather was Chaos and the twins’ grandfather is an unpredictable guy with dementia.
- Morpheus controls dreams and Joseph is the dream manipulator.
- Hypnos controls sleep and Daniel is the sleep inductor.
- Hypnos fell in love with Pasithea, the charity of rest and relaxation. Daniel fell in love with a girl named Sakinah, whose name means peace and relaxation. She did the same for Daniel that Pasithea did for Hypnos.
- Hypnos and Pasithea had four children. Daniel and Sakinah had a love affair four times.
- Hypnos’ home was surrounded by Hypnagogic plants. Daniel grew a bunch of hallucinogenic plants, knows all about them, and sometimes uses them to aid his ability as an amplifier. This was all at the instigation of Joseph, of course.
- Hypnos was told to put Selene’s lover to sleep for all eternity and reluctantly did so. Daniel was told to put his cousin’s boyfriend, a Palestinian, to sleep forever and reluctantly did so.
- Hypnos had wings on his head. Daniel has two birthmarks that look like wings on either side of his temples (they’re hard to see because of his abundance of hair).
