Physical Appearance: Anika is 100% Latina, and is actually very pretty. She has tan skin that only gets tanner in the sun, and she never burns. She rarely gets pimples, and her skin is fairly clear of birthmarks and other blemishes. She’s pretty tall for a girl, about 5 feet, 10 inches tall, and is still growing. She isn’t slim and slight, like most girls seem to want to be; she’s very sturdily built, with a lot of muscle. Though she doesn’t have a super strict workout regime, she does like to keep fit, which she mostly does through swimming. She’s not particularly curvy, since she is mostly muscle.
Anika has a very intense face, with a slightly pointed chin, high cheekbones, and full lips. She has very dark brown eyes, and thin eyebrows. Her hair is medium length, reaching just beyond her shoulders, and is dark brown. Sometimes she straightens it, but most of the time she just leaves it curly. It’s very thick and hard to manage, and normally she can’t be bothered to try. She normally has a scowl or a smirk of some sort on her face, and rarely smiles.
Anika will wear just about anything. She doesn’t care about how she looks, and normally just wears a T shirt and jeans. She has an extensive collection of scary jewelry, with things like bones and skulls and stuff. Her rule is that if anybody says that they like what she’s wearing, she has to throw it out.

Personality Description: Anika is more than a bit…unusual, to put it mildly. Basically, she’s the epitome of the scary, foreign outcast that nobody really understands and that nobody particularly likes, or wants to like. And honestly, she is perfectly okay with that. She isn’t depressed, like some people think, and she isn’t full of anger at the world. She just hates school, and teachers, and people in general who get in her way. She’s quite a difficult person to deal with actually, not that she cares. She’s very self-serving, in an almost selfish way: as long as she’s good, it’s all good. Of course, she spends much of her time in a state of annoyance, so she isn’t often ‘good.’
Anika is not a people person. At all. Even dealing with one or two people makes her jittery and irritable, and she’ll find any excuse to leave, or make them leave. She’s extremely introverted, and spends most of her free time alone, either outside or inside drawing and reading. You might think that she’s very loud and obnoxious, but she figures that that will only draw attention to her. Anika despises attention, so she’s very, very quiet. If somebody says hello, she’ll just ignore them, hoping that they will go away. If they persist with trying to be friendly, she’ll give a sharp reply, but it will be very short, very cutting, and very quiet. When she gets very angry she screams, but it’s rare that she loses that much self control.
When Anika does deign to talk, it’s usually something sarcastic, or annoyed, or insulting. She’s extremely blunt, and is not the one you go to for a kind word. She’s the kind of person who purposely finds faults with others, and then tells them about it. She isn’t one of those people who thinks that they’re helping by pointing out flaws, she really, really just wants to be left alone. Plus, if she tells them that they’re being annoying, there’s always the slimmest chance that they will fix it.
Anika is very, very foreign. She was born in Costa Rica, and her native tongue is Spanish. She’s fairly fluent in English, but isn’t perfect, and is one of those people that will wave their hands around and say, “Oh, how you say in English?” She has a noticeable accent that she’s never bothered to train out of herself. As might be expected of her, she hates English, and will often throw Spanish words into her vocabulary. When she’s annoyed or stressed, she’ll often mutter under her breath in Spanish, and another tactic of hers to get people to leave her alone is to start speaking Spanish, so they either get annoyed or think that she doesn’t speak English, and just leave.
Anika’s extracurricular activities are not exactly…normal. She’s kind of creepy, actually, though as usual she doesn’t mind. Her idea of good art is pictures of people mangled and twisted, completely distorted beyond normal proportions. She is a fairly good artist, but most of her drawings are people writhing in pain. Her favorite sorts of pictures are skeletons, because she adores bones. She also has a bit of an obsession with all diseases, and is a tad bit of a hypochondriac, if only that if somebody coughs near her, she’ll claim they have the bubonic plague. She isn’t really afraid of germs, it’s more that she wants somebody to be sick so she can see what happens. Her room at home is full of her drawings, and other posters with things like bacteria, and wastelands. Anybody who visits is bound to leave with shivers. She also smokes and drinks, which turns a lot of people away.
Anika is usually seen as insensitive and callous to other people’s problems. She doesn’t think she’s a horrible person, she just puts things in perspective. If somebody were to whine about how somebody said that their hair wasn’t pretty, she doesn’t see that as the end of the world, and doesn’t feel the need to consol somebody about something so trivial. She’s also unfeeling to barbs directed at her, and all those people that call her creepy and weird and scary. If the words are true, it’s not an insult, and if they are lies, they aren’t anything for her to worry about. She has far more important things to worry about than what people are saying about her. She’s also quick to judge people, and will remain by those judgments until the person does something to prove her wrong.
Anika is not very book smart. She doesn’t read English as well as she should for an eighteen year old, and doesn’t pay much attention in her classes. However, she is clever and cunning, and when forced to interact with people will manipulate them as best as she can. For example, in class if she is put in a group with four other people, she’ll play dumb and screw up the project in the beginning, so the rest of her group get frustrated with her and tell her to just sit back and do nothing. They do the work and Anika shares the A.
Anika is truly passionate about two things: her power, and the ocean. She is very, very controlled whenever she uses her power, and it would take a huge amount of emotion to make her lose that control. She feels that true power comes from knowing how far you can go and having pinpoint control over yourself, not just wildly unleashing your power like an angry beast. However, a part of her does love that wild, unrestricted power that most people seem to have, but she would never purposely go wild with her power. Instead, she takes to the ocean, which is the embodiment of unlimited power. She loves swimming and boats.
Despite ALL of this, Anika is not a completely heartless robot. She’s one of those people that keeps all her positive emotions bottled up inside, so nobody can take advantage of them. However, there are a few people that are able to crack her shell, and her more positive traits leak out. Anika is definitely a secret-keeper, for friends at least. She isn’t malicious or cruel; she won’t do something harmful to somebody just to be spiteful. Sometimes when she’s on her own or with somebody she really trusts, she’ll let herself loosen up a bit; maybe watch a sad, romantic movie with a girl friend, or go out to a club and dance. However, these moments are very rare. Anika does not like people to get too close to her.

Fears: She hides any fears that she has, but she really fears losing control of her power and hurting someone who doesn't deserve it. That's why she's so obsessed with having control again.
Goal: Anika's goal really is to find something to strive for. She doesn't know what she wants to do with her life, and she'd like to find out sometime soon, especially since she's a senior and will be leaving high school soon.
Power/Ability: Bone Manipulation—Anika has the ability to manipulate bone matter in herself, and in other people. She can shrink bone, make it grow, add new bones or take old ones out. She can also move bones around, though its much easier in herself, since whatever she does to herself can be fixed, even if she were to cause her bones to stick out of her skin. It hurts, of course, but she can deal with it. At full power, Anika could probably take the bones out of somebody, and create a skeleton out of them. However, she’s still very primitive in her power, and can’t do anything like that yet. With other people, she can sort of sense a ‘point of no return,’ where if she were to move or change the size and shape of a bone beyond that point, it would be permanent and crippling. She has trained herself to recognize this point, and never go beyond it if she ever had the need or desire to manipulate others. Basically, she can manipulate other peoples’ bones, and it would hurt, but she can put them back without any lasting effects. So far, she’s mostly concentrated on manipulating her own bones.
This relates because Atlatonan was the goddess of diseases and deformities. Any change in bone structure, size, or placement would create horrible deformities in people, and she has the power to cause these deformities in others.
WELCOME TO MY LIFE ' '
Origin: Montezuma, Costa Rica
History: Anika’s parents, Sofia and Armando, had her older brother, Leandro, when they were in their twenties, then had her three years later. They were fairly wealthy, despite their age, since Armando was the son of a huge business owner in Montezuma, and he inherited the family business. They lived in a nice house on the beach, and had a decent sized sail boat. Anika grew up on the tiny peninsula of the tropical country, with more freedom than was granted most children.
Leandro grew up to be a fairly normal kid. He liked cars, sports, and girls, and was always popular and well liked. Anika, however, was another story. As she grew, she didn’t incline towards pink and dresses and shiny jewelry. She never dressed up or tried to be pretty, and stayed away from most of her classmates. She would often be found alone at the beach, drawing odd, almost grotesque symbols in the sand or simply staring out over the water. Whenever she could, she’d go swimming or sailing.
Anika wasn’t always as hateful and callous as she is now. Though she always was an antisocial loner with a propensity towards creepy things and diseases, she was at least slightly approachable. Though in school she was never popular, there were usually one or two other kids that she could get along with, she got fair grades, and she was as happy as she could be. She began to learn English at the beginning of sixth grade, and picked it up fairly quickly, though she never particularly liked it. Things were okay, or as okay as things could get for someone like her. Then she met Darien.
Darien was a senior while she was a sophomore in high school, and right away he held a sort of allure that no other boy ever had to her before. He was cool and probably could have been the most popular boy in the school. However, he stayed away from the preps and the jocks, preferring to become the king of the ‘dark side’ of the school: the not-so-popular kids who had more depth and more problems than the others. Despite the fact that Anika was even more antisocial than ever, he seemed to have a soft spot for her. Within a few weeks, without Anika really knowing how it had happened, they were dating.
For a few months, Anika grew closer and closer to a normal teenage girl, something she didn’t really realize was happening and probably would have stopped if she had known what would come of it. Darien seemed perfect, at least for her. He was dark and pensive, and always looked at things differently. He introduced her to cigarettes and alcohol, and Anika began to feel the stirrings of what, in another person, could be called love.
One day, she decided to drive by his house to surprise him. She got there, and saw that his car wasn’t in the driveway. She started to drive away, then saw Darien’s car pull up. She pulled over, intending to get out and greet him, but froze. Darien had climbed out of the driver’s seat, which was normal. The girl who climbed out of his other seat was definitely not what she had been expecting. She watched, speechless, as he kissed her goodnight. Again, she was about to leave the car, furious and ready to raise hell, but again, something stopped her. The first girl’s car had pulled away, to be replaced by another. A different girl climbed out, and Darien kissed her too. Clearly, he was getting ready for another date.
Anika was so angry, she was almost literally seeing red. She got out of the car, slamming the door behind her. She marched over to Darien, just barely able to enjoy the shocked expression on his face. She began to yell, then scream, then shriek at the top of her lungs and wave her arms around. She barely noticed that the girl had left, she was concentrating only on Darien. She could feel her anger building inside her, making her feel more powerful than she ever had before. With one final screech, she felt herself release all of that power at once.
Now, Darien was the one screaming, though in pain instead of anger. He collapsed on the ground, writhing and twisting in anguish. Anika had stared in horror at what she had done. Darien’s bones were distorted, twisted out of proportion. Some had grown, some had shrunk, and all had moved somewhere beyond where they were supposed to be. She dithered for a moment, then ran. She didn’t know how, but she had caused this.
She had rushed home, more emotional and panicked than she had ever been before. Her parents and brother were bewildered; they had never seen Anika so expressive. She explained what had happened, but they didn’t seem to believe her. Leandro especially had scoffed, asking her to prove it. Anika concentrated, feeling that power build up again. This time, she concentrated it on herself, and on her legs. She saw her family gape as her legs seemed to grow and bend out of shape, the bones in them sticking sharply out of her skin. That seemed enough proof for them.
The problem was, what should they do about Darien? Though it would be impossible to prove that Anika was the cause of his deformities, it was likely that he would tell the authorities that it was somehow her fault. They would have to leave. Leandro, who had just entered college, decided to stay in their old home. Anika and her parents would move to the United States, where nobody could blame them for this. They moved to Shasta, in northern California.
Anika’s junior year was hell for her. She grew more and more withdrawn, determined never to lose control or let anybody hurt her again. All of the negative traits she had—antisocial, cold, creepy, quiet—seemed to expand and completely take over her personality. She made no friends, and often freaked out her teachers. She changed schools three times that year as her parents tried to figure out where to put her. A few weeks into her senior year, someone from Pantheon tracked her down, and told her she was the reincarnate of an Aztec goddess. She was put on a plane to Washington, and has just started at Pantheon Academy.
CONNECTION TO THE MYTH ' '
There isn’t a lot of info on Atlatonan, but this is what I’ve got!
-The Aztecs were in Central America, and Anika is from Costa Rica. Though I don’t know if her hometown was specifically part of the Aztec Empire, Montezuma was the name of the last Aztec ruler, who was killed by Cortès
-She has an obsession with different kinds of diseases, and Atlatonan was the goddess of diseases
-I can’t imagine Atlatonan was a very popular or well-loved goddess, so most people don’t like Anika
-She loves the ocean, and Atlatonan was also the goddess of the coast and ocean
-Atlatonan was one of the wives of the Tezcatlipoca, so when she was sixteen she was one of the girlfriends of a popular guy
