In times long past, the world was dominated by gods. They ruled over mankind for centuries, until belief in them began to die out and their powers waned, leaving them as mere shadows. Now, the immortal gods have found a new way to take corporeal form...as teenagers.
These unique children have the honor and obligation of hosting what has come to be known, simply, as the Deity; it grants them distinctive abilities and traits that mirror those of the god that has possessed them. The Deity typically does not reveal itself until its host is in adolescences, as this phase of the life cycle is the most adaptable to change. On occasion, however, the Deity will manifest if its host is threatened; this is rare, as it typically results in the child losing control of his or her ability with the potential of injuring themselves or those around them.
As very few hosts are aware of the powerful being lurking inside them, it usually comes as quite a shock when, once puberty strikes, they manifest superhuman abilities. Exposure, therefore, is to be expected. This is how the world's government discovered them; they saw ultimate power in the host children. Whenever word of something superhuman got out, the United Nations would send representatives to collect the individual, under the idea that they are a threat to themselves as well as others and needed training in the use of their abilities by professionals. If this failed to motivate them, the UN took them by whatever means necessary.
They set up a safe haven in a remote town in the Olympic Peninsula of Washington state, which they dubbed Mythos. Mythos is now home to Pantheon Academy, the 'school' in which the incarnates may train and develop their powers. The only rule: You cannot leave.
