Physical Appearance: Sara is naturally a brunette, but she goes through hair colors like she changes clothes, often cycling through being a brunette, a blonde, and a redhead. It really depends on how she’s feeling that day. Her hair is soft and silky due to a daily regimen of keeping it thusly. She has horrible genetics in the way of hair, taking after her father though he won’t admit it.
She’s a bit taller than most young women her age. She’s also not sickeningly skinny. She does a bit of meat on her and doesn’t mind flaunting it. Granted, she’s not as curvy as she’d like to be, but it’s nothing a push-up bra can’t fix. She has a bit of a bust, not as much as she’d like but, again, push-up bra.
Sara has unusual dressing habits. She generally dresses very dark, letting her hair hang down. She enjoys the retro look and plays it up with great enthusiasm. Because she loves pencil skirts and dresses that make her look like she has a bit of a booty, her father gets super protective of her, often giving her his jacket to cover her up. She’ll deliberately dress that way to rebel and (lovingly) annoy him.
Sara has very pale skin that she protects with a militant regimen of sunscreen, moisturizer and lotion. Her skin is downy soft and quite lovely. Her hands are incredibly beautiful when she puts henna on them, beautiful designs that come from a lifetime of practice. Sometimes the designs are on her feet or on patches of skin that are rather private. She’s also become adept at looking in a mirror and making the design that way, allowing her to design her back as well.
Sara has a face that belongs in the 1940s, not in current times. She has that classically glamorous look, the beautiful contours of her skin and the paleness of her skin. Her eyes are this deep star blue and she knows how to use the smolder like no one’s business.
Her father has always said, “Luckily, she doesn’t have any of my looks.”
LET'S GET TO KNOW YOU BETTER ' '
Personality Description: Sara has a knack for being attracted to gay men or bad boys. She’s able to sniff them out for some reason. Either they’re gay or unavailable or bisexual but taken but she’s rarely found a straight or bisexual available man. She’s quite terrible at finding anyone she’s attracted to that has the potential to be good and compatible for her. This works out fine with her dad who, knowing what young men are like because he’s having issues growing up himself, would rather see her become a nun than find a compatible partner.
Sara likes to tease her father. She’s a family girl, in the end, and enjoys being around her family, despite her occasional annoyance that comes with being in a family. Though she doesn’t really remember much of her mother, she loves her too. She’d like to find her sister, but she’s not exactly counting on it because it’s a big world and looking around for one girl is impossible. Sara is the one that usually dyes her father’s hair, though she’s sworn to oath to deny it if people ask.
Sara has a love of the macabre and the retro. She enjoys just about everything from the 40s and 50s, loving the fashion, the movies, everything. She also has a penchant for the old horror movies of the time, having an extensive collection of horror movies from various time periods and various countries. One of her favorites is white zombie. She collects a number of macabre products from oddities to funerary equipment. People are often uncomfortable in her room because it looks like a 40s homage to all things creepy.
Sara is fairly misunderstood. Because she’s a goddess of the underworld, people assume the worst of her, which isn’t totally true because she’s an okay person. She has her up and down days, but she’s not a mean person. Save for that spot of trouble when she was younger, she’s learned from her mistakes. Almost. She still has a horrible taste in men. She also tends to get lost in the background. She’d been going to Pantheon for three years before she was able to come out of her shell and talk to people.
Sara is super creative. Her henna designs are beautiful and she can draw that on just about any of her body-parts. She’s a belly-dancer, specializing in the Egyptian variety, and is an accomplished salsa/flamenco/rumba dancer. She often combines all of them into her own little dances, but she usually does it as a social activity, not a professional activity. She’s also fluent in Egyptian Arabic, Hebrew, Classical Greek, Coptic and Ancient Egyptian. The ancient Egyptian she’s fluent in because she kind of has to be in order to do her spells.

Power/Ability: Witchcraft- Nephthys was the Egyptian goddess of Witchcraft, amongst other things. Sara is also a witch. Instead of spells and candles and cauldrons though, Sara uses henna that she had to reapply regularly to some part of her skin. It’s a time consuming process but, once she’s done it, she’s good for about a month before the stain starts to fade and she needs to reapply. When she does do it, she needs solitude and quiet, so she can mix the paste, and say what she needs to say. The designs also take several hours to set in, in which she tends to meditate or read up on spells she can use. The spells she uses vary, though they are primarily associated with her goddess. Healing and causing disease are the more typical spells she uses, though she can also manipulate the body via the blood, bone or skin. These later spells are primarily touch based. The healing and causing disease isn’t so much, though she has to mutter ancient Egyptian in order for it to work properly. When she uses her body manipulative spells, her favorite thing is to incite drunkenness or increase the hormonal response via the blood or chemicals in the brain. However, they are touch based. Since the paste is magically imbued (and she won’t tell you what she uses to mix it), it won’t come off by any other means than her need to apply. It can’t be induced to come off or the hastening of her skin to make it come off. It acts as a shield for her hands and feet or wherever else she’s dyed her body.
In order to gain this ability, she had to sacrifice her fertility. She can’t conceive and will never conceive. That’s the biggest thing she had to sacrifice. The other is dedicated at least two full days out of every two months in order to perform her henna ritual. The barrenness is something the healers can fix since it’s supernaturally induced.
WELCOME TO MY LIFE ' '
Place of Origin: Born somewhere in the Mediterranean, raised in Manhattan.
Family:
- Father: Sebastian Underhill
- Mother: Nisha Galla
- Sister: Unknown Fraternal Twin
- Adopted Mother: Sylvia Stein
- Adopted Father: Moishe Stein
History:
Sara was a fraternal twin born to Sebastian Underhill and Nisha Galla, who met when Nisha was adopted at the age of 15. They had a huge love affair. When they were 23 and 22, Nisha became pregnant with Sara and her twin and ended up running away from Sebastian after having a freak out. Sara has always blamed it on hormones. After their split, Nisha was still a bit hormonal and out of it, so she went in search of adoptive parents for her children. She found one set for Sara, but Sara doesn’t really know what happened to her sister. On Sara’s birth certificate, both her parents were listed should she ever want to get in touch with them.
Sara was never ignorant to the fact that she was adopted. Her adopted parents, an older couple from Manhattan, were supportive of her if she ever wanted to search out her biological parents. She was fine to wait for awhile. Here was most likely where her love of all things 1940s and 50s, given that her adopted mother was a fairly glamorous socialite during the 50s and still had many of her mother’s stuff from the 40s. Sara grew up around this and fell in love with her. Her adopted father was an archaeologist specializing in Middle Eastern and near eastern studies. This was how Sara learned Ancient Egyptian and Classical Greek, in addition to the more practical Arabic and Hebrew. She had a knack for it and picked up Ancient Egyptian particularly quick, not needing the books and translation aids that even the most seasoned of Egyptologists needed. Sara loved henna and henna designs. If there was anything that annoyed her parents about her, it was that she was always doing henna, which was time consuming and a pain in the ass. They’d need to travel and Sara would angrily exclaim that she can’t because she had to sit for eight hours at the least.
In this way, Sara was largely homeschooled so she could travel with her parents.
It was on one of these trips that activated her ability. She was about fourteen and was on a dig with her mother and father. She was in one of the tombs, studying the hieroglyphs and reading several translations of the book of the Dead, the Ebers Papyrus, and various other texts. Like lightning, she had a vision of a beautiful Middle Eastern woman with mummy bandages for hair. Sara remembered feeling sad, very sad, around this woman. There was something tragic about her, beautiful, but tragic. That’s all she remembered the woman and the dream, but after that she had the instinct to perform magic, witchcraft specifically, using her favorite medium: henna. She knew the incantations, she knew the designs and, combined with her already enormous knowledge of Ancient Egyptian, she knew the words she would need. When her periods stopped coming regularly, her parents took her to see the doctor’s. They said that she had contracted an infection, somehow, that would render it impossible for her to have children. Sara instinctively knew, at that point, that that was her major sacrifice for what she could do. At the time it didn’t bother her though, as she grew older, it slowly began to dawn on her and is now a sore subject.
Her parents, being much older than the typical adopted parents, eventually encouraged her to find her biological parents, given that they were getting up there in age and they wanted to make sure she was taken care of. Not to mention, her adopted mother was familiar with the Underhill name, though she never brought it up so as not to pressure Sara. Sara agreed to search out her biological parents when she was about fifteen years old.
She couldn’t find anything on her mother, but she did find her father. He was actually easy to find given the fact that he was a ‘wild child’ at the age of thirty plus. She more or less showed up on his doorstep one day, showed him the necessary paper work, took a blood test, and proved that she was his kid. Since he’d been looking for his girls, he was at first shocked, then confused and then happy that Sara had showed up. He also wondered why her hands were covered in brown stuff to which she responded that it was a ‘hobby’, not ready to tell him about what she could do. Though, come to find out, he was a giant human magnet. That was a bit of a surprise, but accepted it, since it explained why she was ‘special.’
Sara spends her time in between her adopted parents and her father. It works out. When she’s annoyed by one set, she’ll go to the other.
Shortly before her father took a job at Pantheon, Sara ran into a bit of craziness at her high school. She was dating a kid from the slums, a violent boy named Seth Stone. His brother, Owen Stone, was a little nicer, but Sara was most attracted to Seth for reasons she couldn’t place. She didn’t know it at the time, but he was actually in the closet and was more or less dating her in order for her to be his ‘beard.’ He didn’t want anyone to know because he was supposed to be this tough street-rat. Either way, Sara was content with her violent boyfriend who, on more than one occasion, used fear to control her.
Sara’s best friend was a girl named Idina, a friend she met in Israel. Idina was a kind girl and the two were close. Idina was also dating Owen, so it worked out. The four of them could hang out together and chill. Idina and Sara would talk about their boyfriends, as women are wont to do, and soon Sara began seeing that there was something wrong with her relationship to Seth. And she also had a crush on the very unavailable Owen. While Idina knew about it, she didn’t chide Sara about it, saying, ‘These things happen.’ She wasn’t giving her permission to do what Sara would do next, but she understood that crushes had odd ways of manifesting.
Sara, desperately wanting to know what it was like to be with a nice man, had a rather cruel plan to get Owen drunk and then spend the night with him. The plan went off without a hitch and he, thinking she was Idina since the two looked a lot alike when one is drunk and the lights are off, slept with her. She left early before he could find out what he did.
Somehow, she’s not sure how, maybe it was because she adopted a puppy from the Stone family’s litter of mixed Ibizan/Egyptian Hound puppies, somehow Seth pieces together that Sara had a relationship with Owen. Thinking this was because Sara found out that he wasn’t man enough to seal the deal sometimes, went out to prove his masculinity. He ended up beating Owen within an inch of his life. Since he was going to get in trouble with the law, again and with much more serious charges this time, Seth ran.
After hearing about the incident from Idina, Sara started isolating herself from her friend. Idina kept trying to find her, so they could mourn together, but Sara’s guilt was too much. Eventually, Idina cornered her and Sara confessed it all. Idina was upset but said that if Sara “could do that thing” she occasionally did with her henna for Owen, she could forgive her. Sara agreed and went home to mix up a new batch. She took a little longer than the normal amount of time she took for her ritual, wanting to get this perfect. When she came back, her hands ready for the hardest ritual she knew of, she isolated Idina and herself in Owen’s hospital room. Several hours of the hardest magic she’d ever performed, Owen woke. He still needed medical attention but all the major problems were largely healed. Idina forgave her and the two made up. Idina was strangely understanding of the whole thing, though Sara still felt terrible.
Sebastian and Sara’s parents didn’t know any of this occurred. They just knew that “Sara was having problems at school.” Eventually, Sara told Sebastian, but that because he was special like her. Her adopted parents still have no idea what she could do.
Soon after, Sara’s father got the call from Pantheon Academy, offering him a teaching position, to which they both thought was hilarious. They also said to bring his daughter, seeing as how she needed schooling there too, for being Nephthys.
CONNECTION TO THE MYTH ' '
- Nephthys was the goddess of witchcraft. Sara is a ‘witch.’
- Nephthys gave birth to Anubis. Sara has an Egyptian Pharaoh Hound/Ibizan Hound mix that she named Anpu (Anubis’ Egyptian name).
- Nepththys’ husband Set was an arse-hole. He may also have been gay, though the two aren’t connected. Sara has a knack for falling in love with bad boys, men that unavailable in one way or another or gay guys.
- Nephthys was a goddess of healing and disease. Sara specializes in witchcraft of the body, though she can also induce negative emotions and control shadow and light.
- Nephthys was one of four children. Sara has a fraternal twin sister.
- Nephthys was the daughter of Geb, god of the Earth. Sara is the daughter of Sebastian Underhill, the Geb reincarnate.
- One of the oldest references to henna was in ancient Egypt where it was used as a beautification technique, medicinal purposes and funerary purposes. Sara’s spells are all henna based, using a concoction of her own design that allows her to use spells for similar techniques.
- Nephthys’ husband Set killed his brother Osiris out of jealousy for an affair he had with Nephthys that resulted in the birth of Anubis (who may or may not be Osiris’ son). Sara’s boyfriend, Seth, severely beat another boy, her boyfriend’s brother, Owen, for her having a quick fling with him.
- Nephthys, in order to sleep with Osiris, dressed as her sister Isis and got Osiris drunk. Sara got Owen drunk, came into his room at night pretending to be his girlfriend, and slept with him.
- Nephthys helped her sister Isis in the mourning process of Osiris. Sara, making up with Idina, mourned Owen with her.
- Nephthys was considered barren because she may not have been able to conceive with Set (nevermind her being the mother of Anubis… those wacky Egyptians!). In order to gain her witchcraft ability, which includes the power to heal amongst other things, she sacrificed her fertility and is now infertile, unable to ever conceive.
- Nephthys helped Isis put Osiris back together like humpty-dumpty. Idina asked Sara to do “that thing” she does for Owen and she did.
- Nephthys’ holy day is on July 18. Though Sara doesn’t know when he actual birthday is, she’s always celebrated it on July 18.
