Nemara Marali Dan
Vigilante, Eccentric, Sassy
Vigilante, Eccentric, Sassy
BACK TO BASICS ' '
Full Name: Nemara Marali Dan
Significance of Name:
- “Nemein” is the ancient Greek for “to give what is due”, which is also where some believe the name Nemesis stems from, thus I just kind of worked off the verb to make “Nemara”.
- “Marali” means “Swan”. One of the original stories of Helen of Troy’s birth, and the less popular, was that Nemesis, instead of Leda, was captured by Zeus in swan form and it was she that later gave birth to Helen, Clytaemnestra, and the Discouri.
- The name “Dan” means “judge”, which is essentially what Nemesis is, the judge of divine retribution, judging those who take advantage of the weak or have excessive hubris.

Physical Appearance:Nemara isn’t particularly tall, being only 5’4”. She has a very slight build and it’s not farfetched to think that she could be broken in two by running into a wall. She has only the slightest hint of a female figure and appears to be perpetually stuck at age 13. She compensates by wearing lot’s of what could be construed as “goth/punk/industrial” clothing and boots that add as much height as possible without looking ridiculous. She wears a lot of black make-up which seem to make her eyes pop and accentuates the paleness of her features.
She has very fair skin, which can be annoying given the neighborhood she grew up in, and can burn easily. She’s become best friends with umbrellas, hats, sun screen and bad weather because of it. Her coloring is basically the same as her sisters, with pale skin, bright blue eyes and dark hair.
Nemara has what you would call a ‘five-head.’ Her hairline starts farther back than most and, since she’s fairly self-conscious about it, her hair is always long with bangs. It’s normally a very dark brown, but she goes out of her way to dye it even darker. She has no rhyme or reason as to why, she just does. Should she let her hair grow out, her five-head would emerge again, so she constantly keeps watch to make sure it doesn’t get an inch longer than where she has it. She has it perfect and woe-be to the person who tries to make her do different.
Despite her insecurity concerning her hair, she’s a pretty girl. She has a youthful voice, probably from being youthful, and tends to have a tiny smirk playing about her pink rosebud lips. Then, there are her eyes. She has celestial blue eyes, very bright, that tend to catch people off-guard. Her eye lashes are long and beautiful, dark like her hair, and people can be caught staring because her eyes are so blue. For awhile, the doctors thought it would be a problem, fearing that her eyes might develop a degenerative condition, but it never happened. Instead she was left with “freaky blue eyes” as the kids in her neighborhood used to say.
LET'S GET TO KNOW YOU BETTER ' '
Personality Description: Vigilante- Nemara doesn’t fit into the category of typical justice fighter. She knows the system is broken and she doesn’t like it. So, she works beyond the system. She’ll go ahead and hunt someone down herself and destroy them mentally. She doesn’t think twice about it and will just leave them there. She works more like Daredevil, the Punisher or Luke Cage, as opposed to Superman or Spiderman. However, she reserves her ability for people who have done something like murder, rape, corrupt cops, people who sell drugs to kids, child abuse, animal abuse, cutting the tags off of mattresses, etc. As for lesser criminals, she won’t use her ability, but she will attack. If she sees you hurting someone who doesn’t deserve it, expect to have a shiner two minutes later. She can’t stand it when people take advantage of people who can’t fight back. On the flip side, after she’s done beating the shit out of the bully, she’ll turn to the victim and give them a stern talking too, asking why they didn’t do shit to protect themselves (unless it was one of those ‘outnumbered’ situations). When it comes to her sisters, she’s vicious. Anyone who messes with her sisters she’ll crush totally and utterly and smile about it afterwards.
Eccentric- Nemara isn’t normal. She can switch between laughing hilariously to being stone-faced in the space of ten seconds. She has a goofy nature and can be a bit hyperactive. She’s not above being silly and is especially so when she’s with her sisters. It’s unusual to see the goddess of vengeance snorting and laughing because she heard a particularly good fart joke, but that’s just Nemara. She likes reading comics and does so religiously (it helps give her ideas). Nemara enjoys messing around with her butterfly knives as well and is able to do some pretty impressive tricks with them. She is also usually online googling random information (never know when it’ll come in handy) and can always be counted on to voice some useless bit of information. She tends to weird people out and earned the title “That weird girl who hangs out in the back of the classroom playing with her butterfly knife.” She’s pretty good with it, so the teachers have long since given up trying to make her stop in class. It keeps her hands busy.
Sassy- Nemara is sassy as fuck. She has no problems with sassing someone who acts like a dick to her. Nor does she much care about the consequences. Since she’ll kick your ass anyway, if she starts a fight because of it, so be it. She can be pretty sarcastic when she needs to be and it overtakes her eccentricity. She doesn’t get angry, but she does get sassy and ghetto as all get-up. It comes from growing up in the Mission where you need those traits in order to both survive and be a white girl in a black and Latino neighborhood. It’s a little confusing when she first talks to you and calls you out on your stupidity, but, that’s Nemara so get used to it. She tends to be a little sarcastic to her sisters, but it’s all in love and they know it.
Jealous- Nemara can get jealous like a housewife on Jerry Springer. She can be viciously jealous. Anyone who tries to court her sisters has to go through her rigorous questioning first. She tends to be jealous of anyone who tries to take her sisters away (in a familial way, not a weird incestuous way). For everything else, it depends on the subject. She won’t be jealous over a game, because she thinks they’re stupid, but she can be jealous over someone who has a limited edition sword. She won’t be jealous over a friend-with-benefits having another friend-with-benefits, but she will be jealous if a boyfriend tries to get fresh with someone else.

This goes along with Nemara being the goddess of vengeance and punisher of hubris. She makes whoever has done wrong feel intensely that wrong.
WELCOME TO MY LIFE ' '
Origin: Born in San Francisco, CA.
History: Nemara Marali Dan was born to Kiernan Dan and Amaya Dan, the first of twin girls. The second came out about two minutes later, named Anjolie Dan. The “creatively” named twins were born at San Francisco General Hospital, one on exactly Friday the 13th and the other the day following.
Amaya had been a “hostess” at one of the local “night clubs.” She’d met Kiernan after he’d just seemingly blown in from down south. He was a handsome young man, dashing and kind, and soon they began seeing each other regularly. He came to her place of work frequently and even began asking her out beyond that (in a public, well-lit atmosphere at first, then more and more secluded as they grew to know each other). Soon, he was moving in with her and, two months later, her periods were late and she was retching into a toilet. Despite her career as a “hostess” at a “night club”, she was a fairly religious person, enough so that she wanted to marry before the kids were born, so they weren’t technically illegitimate. Plus, she’d been bugged by her parents ad nauseum about it and therefore nagged Kiernan about it. Long story short, they married about eight months into her pregnancy with twin girls and a month later, the two were born.
Growing up, Nemara always noticed how distant her father was. He seemed to always be staring off into the distance, back south. While he was a loving father and kind husband, he didn’t seem always present. Instead, he was more distracted than anything and would often leave for long periods at a time. Nemara and her sister probably had a combined year’s worth of quality time with him spread out over their sixteen years of existence. Her mother tries to make up for it, as she had managed to save enough money to take a share in the “night club”, called Rhamnous, she worked at and became a part-time-owner. The girls never were left for want. They were moderately clothed, fed, sheltered, etc., but it never really made up for the fact that their father was here one minute and gone the next.
From the beginning, it was painfully obvious how different the two girls were. Nemara had a tendency to “take matters into her own hands.” She was often the voice of reason to Anjolie’s flighty nature. She was also the person who threw-down when someone hurt her sister, emotionally or physically. Though Nemara had never been particularly big, she was quick and it wasn’t long before she had made a reputation for herself as “that crazy girl who will cut you if you scuff her shoes.” Well, not quite that insane, but something similar. After all, she did have a reason for every person she lashed out at, some reasons more viable than others. And no, she had never cut someone for scuffing her shoes.
Nemara had more of a tendency to 'step-in' when some fight or another became too intense. While stepping into one of these fights, she ended up staring down the bully. It was a strange moment, as she was able to project all his evils he's done and the pain he caused into his mind. The boy ended up loosing it.
Shortly after that, Nemara had the brilliant idea to try it on everyone she thought was "shady." This led to her tailing one guy. When he ran, she found she was slightly slower than him. Frustration triggered her last power, as her back bursted out wings and she was able to catch him, do her stare, and perform a citizen's arrest. After some playing with the ability, she found that she could reach speeds of 175 lbs., as fast as a peregrine falcon.
When one boy was being too highly "favored" by her sister (as she tended to use her gift liberally), Nemara found that the boy was really a douchebag. She was able to counteract Anjolie's gift and bring the boy's "favor" level down.
She was about fourteen or fifteen when she found out about Erin. She and her sister ended up going to L.A. to meet their sister and there was an instant bond and connection. None of the girls wanted to part, though all realized they had special "gifts". When it came time to part, all three swore they would meet again, soon, and eventually form a band or something (at least, that's what Nem thought). However, they learned that Erin had received a letter and entered a special school. Soon after, Nem and Anjolie did as well. Nem thought it was kinda funny that she and Anjolie were Nemesis and Tyche, whereas Erin was Eris. She decided to let the goddess of discord thing slide.
CONNECTION TO THE MYTH ' '
- She is the daughter of Nyx (night) and the sister of Eris (Discord) and Tyche (Luck/Prosperity). She’s the daughter of Leila, a cop who worked primarily at night, the half sister of Erin (the Eris reincarnate) and twin sister of Anjolie (who’s name means “happy angel”)
- Nemesis was shown winged so she could be anywhere as anytime. Nem's alternate form allows her wings and she can get up to the same speeds as a peregrine falcon, so she too can be nearly anywhere super fast.
- Nemesis had a temple dedicated to her at Rhamnous. Her mom's club is called Rhamnous.
- Nemesis was the goddess of divine justice, jealousy, all around cynicism. Nemara is sassy, wants to be a cop and is jealousy of any boy who even looks as her sisters in a wrong way.
- Nemesis was said to be raped by Zeus while in swan form, producing Helen of Troy. Nemara hates water fowl.
ROLEPLAYING SAMPLE ' '
This is from a RPG I used to belong too (based on the Pern series by Anne McCaffrey). I’ve matured a bit since I’ve written this, but it’s the best I could find. Both these characters were mine; I wasn’t speaking for anyone else:
Aelis couldn't sleep. Too many thoughts whirred through her head, as usual, her brain rushing a million miles per minute. Sleep was impossible at this point and she could suppress it by either walking around restlessly or bothering Gaeriel. At the moment, it was too cold outside, so bothering Gaeriel seemed like her best bet.
As always, he was in his "office" amidst stacks of non-important paperwork, looking as if he was some sort of paper-happy pack rat. She knew Gael hated his job, as it wasn't at all what he had hoped it would be, but he still kept at it to try and gain some sort of authority.
Sig and Jira were making nests in a stack of papers, lounging about more like cats than fire lizards. They were only papers on tax reform or some such thing, so Gael didn't particularly care about what they did to them.
Aelis heard Maple cheep from her shoulder. She shushed him and trekked through the dangerous stacks of papers that made up her uncle's office.
"Whatcha doin?" She asked.
"Sorting." He replied, his nose buried in a clip board of who knows what.
"Ah. That sounds great, just how I want to spend my evening." She flipped through one stack nonchalantly.
"It's work. It's not supposed to be fun." He jotted something down, then searching furiously through another stack. He glanced at Aelis then said, "Hand me that... the one that says 'amendments.' Yeah, that one." Aelis grabbed a huge folder of papers and thumbed through it.
"I didn't say look at it." Gael replied, hand out trying to snatch it from his niece.
"Why do all your solutions for felons end in capital punishment?" Aelis asked, dodging all of Gael's attempts. "I mean, look at this. Improper Use of Sleds, two days in prison, talking up to your superiors, flogging, assault on a civilian, death. What, do you live in the Terran Dark Ages or something?"
"They're just solutions to problems. Solutions that will work. None of them are final, I need to talk to the Mayor first." He smirked in his own genius.
"The mayor isn't going to go for any of these. In fact, he may lock you up for insanity, you big Nahti weirdo." Aelis tossed him the file. Sig chirped at her irritated, then continued his snoozing.
"I said they weren't final."
"And they're not sane, either."
"Listen, they're just solutions that I think would work. I just need the mayor to approve them."
"You need a girl." Aelis thumbed through some other papers, a record of "crimes" committed since New Landing was founded, some even from Landing.
"Don't you have something you should be doing? Don't you have a boyfriend to visit or something?" Gael stopped looking through his papers and eyed his niece.
Not phased, she rifled through some more files, saying, "It's kind of hard to have a boyfriend when your uncle and guardian is the town executioner, Dr. Guillotine."
"What?" Gael cocked an eyebrow. The resemblance Aelis had to his sister was remarkable at the moment.
"The guy who invented the Guillotine, Louis Guillotine- never mind. You're weird and need to lighten up. There just isn't that much crime here. Why don't you pick up a hobby that doesn't included flexing in your mirror and marveling in your own beauty? Or better yet, why don't you date and get me an aunt? Maybe some cousins?"
"No time." Gael continued making notes, edited his new and improved list of crimes and punishments. He didn't want to bother with women. It was hard enough dealing with Aelis every day.
"No time? You don't do anything. You sit here in a hole and work on stuff no one really cares about. You're boring."
"You're one to talk. Shouldn't you be dating? What happened to that kid you were talking about the other day?"
"Sinjian White-Feather?" Aelis blushed slightly, but it was too dark for Gaeriel to see.
"Yeah."
"I dunno." Aelis stared at her boots.
"Why don't you go be friends with him instead of bothering me in the middle of the night? Or maybe visit some others your age?"
"I dunno."
"And you complain about me..." Gael put another stack of papers onto a bigger stack, and then pinched the bridge of his nose several times. Jira stared at him, eyes whirring.
"I'm going to bed. Why don't you do so too?" Aelis said, turning to leave. Maple squeaked at Gael, then at Jira. Sig flitted up, ready to challenge the little brown.
"Yeah, sure." Gael replied. She really did look like her mother when she argued with him.

How long have you been RPing? Tabletop games: since I was 8. Online RPing: I always seem to catch the tail end of RPing games, when they start petering out and stopping, so, in total, about two years.
