GAIA SHAY LONG
Tomboy Energetic Creative
basics.
• Full Name | Gaia Shay Lóng
• Significance of Name |
How your character's full name can relate to the god's names.
' first - Gaia was an earth goddess. Nüwa worked with Earth.
' middle - Shay sounds like the Chinese work for ‘serpent’, though it means ‘hawk’. Nüwa had the body of a ‘serpent’ (possible a dragon) and did some work in heaven where hawks fly.
' last - Lóng is Chinese for dragon. Together with Shay (if you take Shay for the sound and not the actual meaning) and put in the English order, it means “serpent dragon.” Dragons in the East have serpentine features and again, Nüwa had the body of a ‘serpent’ possibly one of the eastern dragons. It’s pronounced Loo-ng.

Gaia lights up the room when she enters it but seeing as how she hates being inside, unless it’s a tree house, she’s usually found outside and now was no exception. She wore loose white clothing, not unlike those found on Shaolin monks. It was an old outfit from one of her father’s trainers that had been passed on Gaia due to her penchant for all things Kung-Fu. Gaia’s hair, ebony this time, was straightened and pulled back in a low pony-tail, her hazel eyes focused on some distant point, but an easy countenance on her face. Tai Chi Quan did that to her. She felt her movements like water, like waves, pushing and pulling, taking energy and redirecting it. Her hands, growing a darker shade of cappuccino in the in the sun, were graceful and steady, careful and lovely.
She redirected her gaze as she moved into Single Whip after Crane Spreads Wings. Around her, she listened to birds singing and felt a breeze on her face, her dainty nose getting the teensiest bit red in the sun. Bare footed, her feet showed the wear of exercise. Any woman who claimed to exercise vigorously could be proven wrong by looking at her feet. Gaia didn’t mind though. Her forehead was on her head and thus the focus of most people. The only thing she was self-conscious about if anything. Gaia paused and took a quick breath before shifting into the next move. A squirrel ran past her and up a tree. She smiled, closed her Chi, and then plopped down onto the grass like she was five years old.
personality.
• Overall Personality | Gaia is an interesting person. She’s super friendly and it can come off as abrasive for some people. She likes to talk and enjoys getting to know new people so it’s not unusual for her to go up to perfect strangers and start chatting them up. People who don’t know her are usually taken aback by how chatty she is. She’s never peppy, but she is fairly talkative and will literally talk about anything that interests her at the moment, whether it be about herself, about someone else, about the person she’s talking about, about the sky, about something weird that’d happened recently, about a piece of garbage, literally anything. Gaia is just likes being around people and getting to know people. She’s always the first to approach a person.
Gaia seems to have energy droves. The girl is hardly ever seen sitting down. She’s a night owl and an early riser all rolled up into one 5’8” package. The moment someone tries to sit her down, she back up again and walking around. She manages to get a lot done by saving on sleep. The few times she does allow a person to do her make-up, she’ll usually sleep while they do it and then she’ll be up and ready to go as soon as said person is done. Gaia loves moving. The only thing that slows her down really is the prospect of going swimming. She can swim, she just has a fear of drowning and will try to avoid it. That’s pretty much the only thing that can slow her down.
Gaia has always been a tomboy. She’ll wear dresses only when absolutely necessary, but otherwise she’s a sweats and a t-shirt sort of girl. She loves being able to move around and climb and jump and all those sorts of things without having to worry about her lady-parts showing. In addition, she tends to be along better with men than she does with girls. They’re the only ones who really get her sometimes, who get her drinking, swearing and penchant for being outside and rolling around in the dirt. Before she had a woman’s body, people would confuse her for little boy all the time because of her attitude. It was a bit of a shock in her native China, but in the States people sort of shrugged it off.
It isn’t so much that Gaia hates women as she dislikes being around them. She likes being around her mother just fine, but other women just tend to rub her the wrong way. She gets bored around them because they prattle on about unimportant stuff, though she never says that to their faces. She doesn’t consider what she has to say particularly profound, but talking about things like relationships and clothes and all that sort of girly nonsense is boring. There have been the occasional female that interests her enough to be a friend, but they are few and far in between.
Gaia is never on the lookout for a romantic partner. She’s of the belief system that, should one appear, they appear. Should be she an old maid with lots of cats, then she be an old maid with lots of cats. She doesn’t really feel the need for a romantic relationship and figures that one will happen if it happens. That’s it.
Gaia is always outside. It’s hard to keep her inside when it’s a lovely day or even when it’s a crappy looking day (define that as one will). Gaia loves the feel of wind on her face and the smell of her skin after she’s been in the sun for a spell. She likes trying to figure out the metaphors that animals use and she likes playing with the clouds. She enjoys manipulating earth, air, fire and water, creating new plants and feeling the earth breathe in one heartbeat at a time. She can’t do it all at once, of course, that would kill her, but she can do one of two at a time. She suspects with time she can do more but she’s not going to push her chances like she did with the village outside Changsha. After all, that wasn’t really her.
Gaia isn’t particularly sure of how she should feel about being Nüwa and it all comes back to race. Race is a difficult subject for her. She’s been called Afroasian, because her mother is Barbadian-American and her father is Chinese, and has come to realize she doesn’t care for labels. As bad as the race issues are in the States, they are twice as bad in China. No one really cared for the fact that one of their biggest stars had half-black twins. She gets really edgy when people start talking race and it’s a definite turn-off for her. She’ll usually just walk away, pretending it’s her ADD that made her do so. As a result, being dubbed a decidedly Chinese goddess, Gaia has had mixed feelings on the issue and doesn’t really talk about the myth or dwell too much on who is what deity and who is destined to end with who. Again, it bores her. She feigns ADD.
Although, Gaia really does have ADD. She used to be medicated for it, but she had since taken herself off the medications because they affected her nature manipulating ability. Gaia is still talkative and bouncy as hell, but she can at least do something with her hands now, practicing her nature manipulation either by mutating wood or attempting to persuade bees to make patterns or seeing if she can make a pipe in the school building spring a leak.

' one – People- Gaia is definitely a people person. She loves talking and being around people. It’s kind of a harsh trade because, most of the time, people are hanging out in cities or houses and what not. She often has to choose between the two. She isn’t necessarily on the prowl for a man, as she doesn’t feel the need to justify her existence through the menfolk, but she does enjoy talking to boys more than girls because they seem to better understand her out-doorsy-ness.
' two – Animals – Sometimes she gets them better than she does people. Animals seem to gravitate towards her and she doesn’t mind. Her love of animals is for all manner of the animal kingdom from elephants to whales to spiders to sheep. There isn’t really a limit at to what kind of animal she likes.
' three – Plants – There is nothing more natural than hanging out in a forest or around plant life. She feels safe out among trees and shrubs, often camping without a tent. She loves nature and never skirts a chance to go camping or hiking.
' four – Mud/Clay – Ever since she was little, mud has been something she enjoyed playing with. She liked making mud pies, mud bombs to throw at her brother and pretending she was a mud monster. Now she likes working with clay and creating pottery and what not, but she’ll still occasionally throw a ball of clay at someone for fun.
' five – Working with her hands – Creating things had always been something she enjoyed doing. It’s part of why her father insisted she learn Kung-Fu because otherwise she definitely filled the criteria of ‘idly hands are the devils play things.’ She likes to make things out of clay, out of certain metals, out of wood, really whatever she can get her hands on. Even man-made materials are fun to her because she can make little machines.
• Dislikes |
' one – Cities – They smell and there’s usually a lot of squalor around.
' two – Floods – Drowning scares her. Therefore floods and people losing their homes via flood makes her uncomfortable. It’s the only aspect of nature she doesn’t care for.
' three – Having nothing to do – She doesn’t like being bored. Ever. She gets in trouble when she bored.
' four – Twincest jokes – She is a twin. So, ew.
' five – Racial Anything – She’s half-Chinese and half-Barbadian-American. She doesn’t deal well with racial jokes or slurs or people summing her up from looking as her and assuming something about her.
• Flaws |
' Physical – She’s got a five-head that she attempts to cover with bangs or hairstyles that cover her forehead.
' Emotional – Has a self-preservation response to racial comments made her way. Meaning she’ll make a squirrel attack one’s face without giving it a second thought.
' Psychological – ADD. She needs to be doing something otherwise she loses focus and attention and will go off and do something stupid, though generally not harmful to anyone but her ego. She’s been put on meds for it before.
• Habits |
' Physical – She’ll pick at her cuticles.
' Emotional – She’ll pick at her cuticles when people talk about natural disasters or race or she’s inside or she’s bored or all of the above.
' Psychological – She does this because said subjects make her uncomfortable.
• Skills |
' one – Skilled martial artist (Kung Fu)
' two – Good at making things
' three – Survivalist
• Fears | Drowning and her abilities getting away from her.
• Dreams | To preserve Chinas natural forests and ensure a better life for citizens in the country-side.
• Best Memory | When I was about six or seven, I saw a flying fox for the first time. I wandered into a forest off the set of one of my dad’s films, not too far because I know my mother would have tanned my hide if I went too far away. My brother was clinging to her skirts, as he usually did, leaving me to run around on my own. I found a sparse forest full of trees that had lost most of their leaves for the coming season, but the flying foxes, with four foot wingspans, were all sleeping. The sun was about to set so they’d wake at any moment, but I was happy to see them even then. They had tiny faces, like a fox, and one stared at me like she knew me. She and I locked eyes and it was as if I understood her and she understood me. She was lovely and I haven’t forgotten her furry face since.
• Worst Memory | As kids, I was used to Adam tailing me around. I didn’t like it when followed too closely. I usually wanted to do my own thing, away from him, but he would always tag along, snot nosed and threatening to tell on me if I didn’t let him come. Then, one day, I grew sick of it. I pushed him, hard, and he fell in the mud. On the way down, he hit his head on a rock and scraped his arm on another. I didn’t there were any rocks in the mud. Seeing that I hurt him so bad made me scared. I loved my brother, still do, but didn’t realize it really until I saw him bleeding and crying.
ability.
The ability to manipulate the forces of nature and elements connected to it.
-The Superpower Wiki
• Applications
- Shay is connected directly and can communicate, influence, manipulate and control nature: all living beings and plants and natural phenomena, such as the weather and geology of the Earth, and the matter and energy of which all these things are composed. Shay can survive in any natural environment on earth.
- Shay can control, tap into, blend and/or become elements of nature, including air, weather, lightning, earth, stone, metal, water, ice, clouds/mist, fire etc. She can control animals and plants and mimic their abilities and forms.
- Because Shay can communicate with nature itself, they become instantly familiar with her surroundings, the connection is so deep that the earth can respond to one's emotions and desires (blossoming with flowers and calming weather when happy, making skies stormy when angry, shifting the landscape to gain the advantage in a fight, etc. )
- Shay can purify, heal and generally influence the health of nature. And considering the fact that she’s helping the environment, plants and animals act favorably towards her.
• Limitations
Why This Hurts:
- Can only use two abilities at a time because otherwise it’s too much of a strain on her body.
- Because it’s a give and take relationship, she has to exchange some of her own human energy for nature energy. This can result in her being more ‘animal’ than human or more ‘plant’ than human.
- She can be a slave to the emotions and whims of nature as opposed to having a ‘rational’ human mind.
- In the city, around concrete, she’s useless.
- When not around nature, she starts getting sick and weak. It becomes visually apparent after about ten hours in a non-natural environment.
- She needs to at least touch something natural in order for her abilities to work. This can be an animal, a plant, rain, whatever, but it can’t be man-made.
- Just because she can manipulate certain elements, doesn’t mean that particular element cancels out another. For example, when she manipulates water, it doesn’t mean she automatically cancels out people who manipulate fire. It just makes fighting with them that much more epic.
What She Can Do:
- Air Manipulation
- Animal Empathy
- Communicate with and command earth's environment psychically (limited to her vicinity… can’t influence something across the planet or even across the state).
- Danger Intuition
- Earth Manipulation
- Ecological Empathy
- Electricity Manipulation
- Environmental Adaptation
- Fire Manipulation
- Flower Manipulation
- Fungus Manipulation
- If the area has been cleared of natural wildlife and vegetation, then both will be attracted to return to the area.
- Magma Manipulation
- Metal Manipulation
- Mold Manipulation
- Nature Enhancement
- Nature will defend Gaia from potential threats (and is aware of how to tell friend from foe).
- Pheromone Manipulation
- Plant Communication
- Plant Growth
- Plant Manipulation
- Poison Generation
- Self-Sustenance
- Water Manipulation
- Wood Manipulation
- Zoolingualism
What She Can’t Yet Do:
- Animal Manipulation
- Disaster Manipulation
- Disease Manipulation
- Insect Manipulation
- Limited Electromagnetism Manipulation
- Limited Gravity Manipulation
- Ocean Manipulation
- Planetary Empowerment
- Season Control
- Swamp Mimicry
- Terrain Manipulation
- Weather Manipulation
history.
• Birthplace | Changsha, Hunan Province, South Central China
• Mother | Dominique Lóng (née Martin)
• Father | Fai Lóng
• Siblings | Adam Henry Lóng (twin brother)
• Other Relations | None that she knows of
• Overall history | When Dominique Martin met Fai Lóng, she wasn’t expecting to strike up a relationship, then a marriage, then a set of twins with him. Dominique was a body guard with roots in Barbados while Fai was an action star in Chinese cinema. He’d hired Dominique as a body-guard when his popularity started steadily rising. It wasn’t necessarily that he couldn’t take care of himself, it was just that he couldn’t take care of himself against five individuals or three individuals and a gun. Dominique could and thus she was hired. After a year of knowing each other, Dominique and Fai realized that they had more or less fallen in love and thus had started a serious relationship, followed by a serious marriage. Dominique was soon thereafter pregnant with twins and gave birth while Fai was on a set in Changsha. She had a boy and a girl both with a powerful set of lungs and a penchant for squirming. One was named Gaia and the other Adam, both given earth names for the beautiful environment in which they were born.
Gaia and Adam were promptly given the same training their mother and father had. Gaia took to Kung-Fu naturally, like her father, whereas her brother was more of a brawler, like their mother. Gaia found herself either training or wandering around the sets her father worked on. Adam was more of a momma’s boy and would instead go and visit with the cast and crew. It wasn’t that Gaia didn’t like people, she was definitely a people person, but she also liked being around nature and relaxing.
Gaia’s life, odd though it was, was surprisingly wholesome. She didn’t have any sob stories about an abusive family. Though her father was a popular star and her mother worked in security, both were loving parents and that gave their children as much time as working parents could reasonably give. Both children were treated equally and with love and respect. Both were brought up with good morals. Though they were both homeschooled because of their parents’ work schedule, they had even educations and graduated fine. Aside from her name and being trilingual in English, Mandarin and Cantonese, Gaia was fairly normal with all the usual trials and tribulations that affect most teenage girls. In the long run, Adam became the bookworm and Gaia became the tomboy.
Life really didn’t start becoming strange for Gaia until she was about seventeen. Gaia had always enjoyed being in the forest or the desert or parks or wherever her family happened to be at the time. She was, at this particular time, in a particular dense patch of forest and a snake slithered up to her. They locked eyes for a moment before she heard it speak. It said something nonsensical, after all humans have a different outlook on life than a snake would, so she thought it kind of odd. Then, once the snake left, she felt the trees breathe. There was no other way to explain it. The wind whirled around just her and then rushed away. She could hear the heartbeat of a flying fox from miles away. She felt the earth, nature, she felt it all alive and around her. Then she promptly fainted from the sensory overload, just in time for it to rain.
When she came too, she was in her father’s trailer with her mother looking over her, ensuring she was alive and breathing. Gaia couldn’t explain what had happened to her, just that it happened and she couldn’t describe it. Her mother thought she hit her head and thus forth she didn’t speak of it to anyone. Instead, Gaia had been caught out in a downpour when she fainted and ended up with a bad case of pneumonia. It gave her a fear of flooding and drowning since she would have died if she wasn’t found.
Gaia continued to practice her ability. She was able to make tiny clay men come alive and walk for a short time. Some were refined, some weren’t because she lost her interest to go and work on something else. Gaia was able to make the water bend to her will when she wanted to cross a stream. She could tell the bees to leave her alone and could make fragrant flowers surround her as she slept. And she kept it all a secret from everyone except her brother.
She practiced mother with the little clay men. Those she made walk about, detailed little things. When her brother wanted to see, she made him some less detailed clay models to ‘serve’ hers. He didn’t know this, but it became apparent when they didn’t listen to him and instead listened to her. He was a bit peeved and eventually went back to his books and studying while she continued to practice her other studies.
When she was about 22, she gained her teaching degree in World History. Having always been a fan of history and human history, she began teaching the local children on her father’s set. It was on one of these sets, in one of these villages where she taught, that her powers reached a whole new level. The studio needed a shot of her father ‘flying’ in some martial art movie and the only nice spot they could find was by a village that thrived on fishing and a working dam. Gaia promptly began teaching there. One day, it started raining. The rain wouldn’t let up and it began to flood. The crew wanted to evacuate the staff and actors to a safer location, but it still left the village in danger. The dam would overflow into the village and most of the people would either die or be displaced. Despite her parents’ wishes, and without them knowing really, Gaia ran out into the rain in time to see the dam be pushed to its limit. The villagers were trying to evacuate but they wouldn’t make it in time.
At first, fear began to overtake her as she watched the floodwaters rise. However, her body seemed to know what to do. Mechanically, as if she were watching herself from the outside, she stared at her body began to use earth to patch up the dam, wind to disperse the water and plants to soak up the excess. The weather began to brighten and she still watched it from outside herself. The clouds dispersed and when she was allowed control of her body back, she saw the village was safe. She returned home and passed out for several days, lethargic when she was awake. She since hadn’t been able to do anything of that caliber.
While, as far as anyone knew, the flood had been broken up of its own accord, Pantheon Academy knew better than to see it as a stroke of luck. Soon, the school, posing as a university, contacted her for a special scholarship she had received for the school. Seeing it as a wonderful opportunity for their daughter, her parents gave their blessing and Gaia attended school.
similarities between your character and your deity.
' one – Both have twin brothers, though Gaia is not romantically linked to hers.
' two – Nüwa was the creator of humans and life and Gaia has the ability of nature manipulation.
' three – Nüwa was the outdoorsy goddess and her brother Fu-Xi was the bookworm. Same for Gaia and her brother.
' four – Gaia’s first experience with nature manipulation was with a snake. Nüwa was supposed to be half snake.
' five – Nüwa made the upper-ecehlon from refined clay. Gaia made some detailed clay figures get up and move around.
' six – Nüwa made the lower classes with mud to serve the upper classes. Gaia made some mud figures, not at detailed, for her brother to mess around with.
' seven – Nüwa saved humanity and heaven by sealing up the wall of heaven and saving the gods from a fight between Zhu-Rong and Gongong that had caused a flood. Gaia anonymously used every ounce of her ability to seal up a dam from destroying a village near the set of her father’s latest movie.
' eight – Nüwa didn’t save humanity the first time from a deluge, but survived it and managed to save them the second time. Gaia wasn’t able to save herself from a flood and nearly died from it. The second time, she saved a village and herself.
' nine – Nüwa is listed as the first Emperor of China. Gaia was the first technical child of her parents’ children, being the first twin born.
' ten – In some versions of the myth, Nüwa made men from clay first and then made women to serve the men, instead of making rich people first and then poor people to serve the rich. Gaia prefers talking and hanging around guys than she does with girls.
