Greek myth has probably been the most famous myth in the world. But in the late 90s, rumor spread, saying that the gods have returned in human forms, bestowing their powers and traits to young adults. As this came up, some people started to report witnessing teenagers having special abilities, such as controlling the weather, calling the dead, and every other impossible things.

An isolated boarding school was built for good, to keep these gifted teenagers from being exposed in the public and also to provide them a safe place to develop and train their powers. Apparently, it seems not only Greek gods have bestowed their powers on these gifted children. Recently it was discovered that other gods from other pantheons were also involved. Thus, the school was later renamed 'Pantheon Academy'.

Are you one of them?

Eko Harvey-Montserrat

[image] [image] [image]
Talkative, Blunt, Weird

BACK TO BASICS ' '

Full Name: Elzo Benneth Harvey-Montserrat
Significance of Name: Elzo Benneth is just a weird Utah name I found, but when you try to write out “Elzo” like a little kid, it looks like Eko, another way of saying Echo. Harvey-Montserrat together means “the fort on the jagged mountain”. In some versions of the story, Echo is Oread, or a nymph who would have lived on jagged mountains.
Nickname(s): Eko. She won’t answer to anything but this since it’s the only thing she’s been called since she was 3.
Age: 15
Gender: Female
Orientation: Bi-Curious
Grade: Freshman
Celeb you're using: Amanda Seyfried
Deity: Echo - Greek
Title of your deity: Loudmouth copy-cat nymph

STRIKE A POSE ' '

Physical Appearance: Eko looks a little like a fairytale princess. She has super fair skin that rarely burns or tans. It just stays fairly constant. She doesn’t usually blemish easily, one of the few things she likes about herself. She was thankfully spared the humiliation of acne and mosquitoes tend to stay away from her Nordic blood, thus she’s generally blemish free. The only flaw on her skin is a scare below her right breast where her husband stabbed her with a butcher knife. It’s never totally gone away and instead sits like a strawberry-colored reminder of darker days.

She has long wavy blonde hair that comes to about her mid-back. She was forbidden to cut it unless she was in mourning and it’s just a habit that had stuck with her. She takes fairly good care of it, brushing it regularly every morning and letting it hang long. Since she was always told that only hussy girls wear it long, this is Eko’s way of “sticking it to the man”, meaning her family.

Eko has eyes light blue stars. They are wide and searching, like an owl’s. Eko sometimes forgets to blink and tends to stare people down when she’s talking to them, coming off a little disconcerting. However, it’s not intentional. She genuinely forgets to blink and gets more intense in her conversations then most people.

She had fairly plump lips, a trait that runs in her family. It looks like she had collagen done, but in actuality, those are just her lips. They are a rosy pink and very pillowy, begging for a kiss. At least, they could be if you could get her to shut up for two seconds.

Standing at 5’3”, Eko is not very tall. She’s fairly thin from years of not having enough to eat. She’s fairly small in the bust department, her chest being not much bigger than a B. Her movements tend to be graceful, but then again, a lot of reincarnated nymphs tend to be graceful. Eko just has more experience with it because of her ability.

A note about Eko. She's biologically deaf. Despite there being healers on campus, it's a condition she was born with, so even if they were to heal her, it would just go back to it's original state. And, in the original state, she was still almost deaf anyway. However, she functions so well by reading lips and signing so well that most people don't even know she's deaf, until she blabbers it out.

LET'S GET TO KNOW YOU BETTER ' '

Personality Description: Eko is an odd character. On the one hand, she’s very talkative, which means she’s also very blunt. Often growing up, her mother would smack her upside the head for talking too much and exposing too much. She loves to talk and would do it all day if people would let her. Her bluntness tends to get her into trouble, with people thinking she’s being rude. She’s also fairly stupid when it comes to which subjects are ok to talk about. One minute, she could be talking about how her father once had her uncle’s whole family brutally drowned and the next she’s talking about how fat those jeans make you.

However, her talkativeness is also a defense mechanism. Being royally screwed over by everyone and anyone you’ve ever known and loved tends to make a person very distrusting. As a result, Eko has a hard time trusting anyone. Just because she confides deep secrets about her family, doesn’t make a person special. Eko confides deep family secrets to everyone she knows because she likes to talk, not because she trusts you. Most likely, she’s trying to scare people off with horror stories about her childhood so they’ll go away (and she has quite a fair few horror stories so expect some nasty ones). It takes a lot for Eko to trust anyone and probably won’t do so anytime soon.

Eko also tends to be one of those people who try to top every story you have. You know the type. You say you had an uncle who committed suicide, she’ll say she had an aunt who had a murder-suicide and ended up slaughtering her kids in addition to herself. You say you have a dog, she’ll say she had a dog and two chickens. You say you’re the incarnation of a nymph who was ravished by a god, she’ll say she was a nymph who was both ravish and then brutally torn apart by a god. Yeah, she’s one of those people.

Despite appearances, Eko is fairly worldly when it comes to Latino cultures. Whenever the threat of a raid loomed over the compound, the Prophet would have everyone head over to their compound in Chihuahua, Mexico. As a result, Eko is fluent in Spanish and fairly familiar with Latino culture as a whole. However, looking at the blonde haired blue-eyed girl, no one would ever guess this.

An enduring feature about Eko is how she looks at the world. It’s as if she’s seeing the world for the very first time. Indeed, for the most part, she is looking at the world for the first time. After being stuck on a compound for most of her life, she tends to be amazed by a lot of what she sees at Pantheon. It’s a bit cute because she comes off like a little kid. It’s not unusual for her to ask what everything is and how it works, then launch into a two-hour story about how so-n-so cousin was killed by a similar object.

Eko has an odd relationship with men, meaning they least of all she trusts. She suffers from Androphobia, or a fear of men. Her father sold her like cattle, her husband raped and beat her and then her first boyfriend treated her like crap. It takes a lot for her to trust a man and generally she’ll just tell a long story about how her aunt castrated her husband in order to get them to go away. If you’re a male character, expect a lot of awkward moments with this one.

Power/Ability: Reflexive Memory- Eko can see anything physical thing once and do it perfectly there-on out. By watching Bruce Lee movies, she’s now excellent at Kung Fu. The only drawback to this ability is that, if she watches someone who’s less than adequate at a physical ability, she’ll in turn be less than adequate until she sees someone who’s better at it. As a result, Eko is a perfect dancer, singer, musician, fighter, swimmer, athlete, etc. etc. than most people, rivaling even gods whose main focus is in any one of these topics.

WELCOME TO MY LIFE ' '

Origin: Heaven’s River Compound, Utah
History: Eko is probably the only girl at school who was married, divorced, tried for homicide and placed under witness protection all in the same year.

Eko’s original name was Elzo Benneth Harvey-Montserrat. However, when she was learning how to write her name at age three, she couldn’t quite spell the whole thing, ended up just trying to write “Elzo” which, because of how close the “lz” where to each other, looked like “Eko.” Her mother and sisters were so amused by this, they called her Eko from then on, and so much so that she tended to forget her actual name was “Elzo Benneth”.

Eko was the sixth daughter and child of her mother, Margena Montserrat, and the twenty-second of her father, the prophet Nathan Harvey, a man in charge of a non-LDS polygamous compound in Utah, called Heaven’s River. Her mother was her father’s fourth and most favorite wife, however she and her three other siblings tended to blend into a crowd of kids all vying for Nathan’s approval. Problem with this was that Eko was born with severe hearing problems. While she had limited hearing, the majority of the time she need a hearing aid. Her mother took what little money she had and would daily take Eko to town in order to get her help with learning how to sign and read lips. Eko did so rapidly , picking it up faster than any other student they’d had. Pretty soon, in the space of a month, Eko was able to speak and understand people as if she had no hearing issues at all.

However, when Eko was four, she realized that by talking people’s heads off, they would notice her. As a result, she began talking all the time. It became so annoying to her dad and moms that they eventually gave her stuff just to go away. In this way, Eko managed to survive. In addition, Eko’s younger siblings soon began to rely on her for distracting the adults. During one exploration trip as a seven-year-old with her siblings, they found their father’s secret room. Inside was a TV and bunch of candy. Since Eko’s mother’s TV had been broken since she was born, Eko was instantly enraptured with the programs. Her siblings promised her that, if she watched out for them and distracted the adults, she would get first pick with the TV. So it worked until Eko was about eight.

In the meantime, Eko found that she could copy exactly the actions on TV. She could copy martial art moves, sports moves, cooking shows, hunting shows, foreign movies, surgery shows, etc. Anything she had seen on TV from flying helicopters to dancing the tango, she could do it and she could do it so well, it was as if she had been doing these things her whole life. Her siblings were amazed with her ability and she used it freely, becoming a kind of prodigy. Her mother just thought she was gifted, but had no idea Eko had manifested reflexive memory. And it didn’t just stop at stuff she saw on TV. Anything her siblings or parents demonstrated, she could do.

However, her learning time was cut dramatically short. One day, after distracting her father’s first wife, Hertha, while her siblings escaped, Hertha caught them in the act. As a result, she beat Eko within an inch of her life. She was bleeding out of both her ears and barely conscious when her mother found her. Her mother took her to the emergency room, saying that “she fell”, and they found out that Eko was now officially deaf. As a result, she was forced to rely on her ability more than ever and honed it to a fine art.

When Eko was fourteen, the compound was raided by the U.S government. Eko and her family fled to a compound in Chihuahua, Mexico. It was standard procedure and Eko had already been there several times as a kid under false alarms. She loved the country and became fluent in Spanish and familiar with Latin America culture during the family’s many “vacations”. However, this time was different. Her father’s right hand man, a guy name Gilles, became interested in Eko and asked her father for her as his wife. Nathan, who was more than happy to have the talkative brat taken off his hands, gave his blessing and immediately married Eko to Gilles a week later. Thus, Eko became Gilles’ third wife. When Eko didn’t want to consent on their wedding night, Gilles took advantage of her anyway.

Time passed and Eko eventually got to know Gilles’ oldest son by his first wife, sixteen-year-old Narcisso. The boy was extremely handsome and Eko fell head over heels for him. However, Narcisso knew how handsome he was and knew the effect it had on Eko. After a while, he began to string her along, promising her a lot and allowing her to revel in how beautiful he was.

Finally, Eko began to get tired of it. She told Narcisso to meet her at the river near the house. He did and Eko confessed her feelings saying they should run away together. Narcisso laughed in her face and told her to get lost, that he was done with her. Eko, upset, ended up employing her ability against him, a move she had seen from a Steven Seagal film. She snapped the boy’s neck. Still alive but paralyzed, he fell into the water and promptly drowned.

When Eko ran back to the house, she played dumb with her husband and sister wives, saying she didn’t know where the boy was. However, it didn’t take them long to find the body. Gilles got a hold of Eko and beat her to within an inch of her life, including a stab below her breast with a nearby butcher knife. She barely got away, though bloody and broken. The compound members tried to track her down but she took to the Uinta mountains where she found a cave. Having seen a mountaineering show before, she was able to survive relatively well, long enough to find the cave. But, she passed out from the loss of blood, having no instruments to help heal herself.

When Eko awoke, she was in the infirmary of a strange building. A member of the Pantheon staff explained where she was, that she was enrolled in a new school. She also explained that Eko was the reincarnation of the nymph, Echo, hence her reflexive memory. She was also told that her family had been reimbursed, she was on witness protection for a murder (as it was made to look like she was witness, not a murderer), and that she was now divorced from her husband. She was also told that her name had been legally changed to Eko Harvey-Montserrat, instead of her old name.

Thus, Eko starts in the middle of her freshman year, a witness, a divorcee, and a freshman.

CONNECTION TO THE MYTH ' '

- In the myth, Echo was an Oread, a mountain nymph. Eko’s name means, “Eko of the hill fort on the jagged mountain.”
- Echo used to distract Hera while Zeus went off and philandered with the nymphs. Eko used to distract her father’s first wife while her siblings snuck into his office to watch TV.
- Echo was eventually caught and cursed by Hera that she could only repeat people’s voices. Eko was eventually caught and beaten by Hertha, who took away her ability to hear.
- Echo’s ability is to copy people’s voices. Eko’s ability is to copy people’s body movements, including their voices.
- Echo was pursued by the god Pan, who she scorned because she wanted to be an eternal virgin and her ended up raping her. Eko was pursued by her father’s friend Gilles, who married her and raped her. Gilles also means “small goat.”
- Echo fell in love with Narcissus who scorned her love when she confessed it to him. She had Nemesis punish him by having him fall in love with his own reflection in the water and die. Eko was also scorned by her step-son Narcisso. She took vengeance on him by snapping his neck and he drowned.
- When Echo scorned Pan’s advances, after raping her he tore her into pieces and scattered her over the earth. After Eko killed his son, Gilles beat her almost to death, causing her to flee to the mountains.
- Gaia took Echo’s pieces and buried them within her caves, giving Echo new life as the Earth’s voice (an echo). Eko hid in the mountains to hide from her angry family and passed out in a cave. When she came too, she was reborn as a Pantheon student.

I got a problem with the power...Echo is really more sound based i think...i understand the sense of why you chose it, but i'm beginning to get a little iffy. Do you want to plead your case more? Or perhaps change your deity to a battle goddess or something.

Plead my case? Why yes, yes I would...

My first instance was to choose a sound based power as well, but here's the problem with that. Choosing a sound-based power is kind of missing the whole point of the Echo myth. While, at it's basest nature, Echo became merely a sound, that's not what the myth was really about. It was a tragedy about a girl who lost her identity.

Echo's whole main problem was that she could only copy what others said. The ancient Greeks believed, much like today, that a person's ability stems from what they do and say. The fact that Echo could only copy other people's voices and speeches meant she had no personality of her own, she could only leech off of others. That was the tragedy of her position and the tragedy of her story. Here was this talkative girl who suddenly was stricken down and forced to only copy what others said before. She had no identity from there on out, as she could only copy what others had said before her. Likewise, because of her inability to have her own identity, Echo lost her love, Narcissus, who didn't want a girl with no personality (among other things), and indeed was horrified when he first saw her.

In fact, the only way the poor girl could express herself was through her body. The muses ended up training her and teaching her, thus she became a more physical being since she couldn't speak.

Given the underlying meaning of the Echo story, a sound-based ability just didn't feel right. It felt like it wasn't doing the story justice. Not the mention, if you want to be that literal about Echo's ability, all she could do was copy people's voices. This is lame. She can't do any of the cool voice powers, such as sonar or a sonic scream (which don't make sense in my opinion because once you go the vocal route, you HAVE to be literal), and it kind of puts the character in a dead end as far as abilities go. So, I went online to find something a little better. What I found was Maya Lopez.

This idea of Echo as a copy-cat isn't a new one. It's has been used and understood in the Marvel universe before. There is a hero named Echo (Maya Lopez), who is also a muscle mimic and my girl is semi-modeled off of her. This Echo's ability is also that she can see and instantly copy any body movement as well. And it made more sense to be than something sound based.

Thus, Eko was born and it better fits the myth. Eko's problem, concerning her powers, will be identity as well. All her abilities, both this one and those to come, aren't really and truly her own. She can only borrow those that have come before. She's a copy-cat and doomed to never have anything original and all of her own, much like Echo's voice was stolen from her. While at first glance this ability might seem cool (being able to see and do anything is kind of cool), after awhile it's going to weigh on the girl. When she gains her other powers (all copy-cat powers too, I might add), she's going to be at a disadvantage. I mean, what happens if she's put in a room with no light or anyone around? She's screwed because she can't copy anything. She had no ability of her own, just this slough of abilities that rely on someone else, a kind of parasitic ability.

That's just what the original Echo's abilities were all about. She was a parasitic being, only able to talk by borrowing the speech of others. Such is Eko's problem as well, only being able to do things by copying others. If she was left in a room all by herself and had never seen anything demonstrated, she'd be just a regular person. If Echo was left in a room, and indeed she frequently is, she's unable to have speech or any personality of her own, she's nothing.

I have more to say on the topic buy my hand is cramping. Stupid body... >:(

Reflexive Memory
Reflexive memory also known as adoptive muscle mimicry, is a variation on intuitive aptitude but refers mainly to individuals who can replicate physical motions they've witnessed.
