Greek myth has probably been the most famous myth in the world. But in the late 90s, rumor spread, saying that the gods have returned in human forms, bestowing their powers and traits to young adults. As this came up, some people started to report witnessing teenagers having special abilities, such as controlling the weather, calling the dead, and every other impossible things.

An isolated boarding school was built for good, to keep these gifted teenagers from being exposed in the public and also to provide them a safe place to develop and train their powers. Apparently, it seems not only Greek gods have bestowed their powers on these gifted children. Recently it was discovered that other gods from other pantheons were also involved. Thus, the school was later renamed 'Pantheon Academy'.

Are you one of them?

Sara stared at the crowded cafeteria. The sea of unfamiliar faces made her stomach slightly queasy. She stared down at her tray of food. A salad, apple and orange juice stared back at her. She had no desire to eat and momentarily considered just dropping everything and eating outside. Biting her lip, she looked back at the sea of faces. She didn’t like this sea. This kind of sea was beyond her control.

Tentatively taking a few steps forward, she began to search out and empty sea. At first glance, it didn’t look like there were any. However, upon closer inspection, Sara found an empty table. When she came closer, she saw why. The table was rickety and had graffiti all over it. Oh, well, she thought, and sat her tray down. She airily brushed the stray flecks of food off the table. Sitting down, she set about opening up the orange juice. A small smile spread across her face as she coaxed the water in the juice up into the air. Making a ball, she stuck a straw into the ball and began to sip the juice down. She hadn’t been allowed to play with her food like this at home, but here at the school, no one seemed to bat and eyelash.

Sara coaxed the juice back into its bottle. She looked around at the cafeteria and felt keenly aware of how alone she was. Even here, in a school full of people like herself, she felt alone. Sara sighed and began to pick at her salad. Even with playing with her food, she still felt lonely. Normally her sisters would have been all over that trick, but here, nothing.

Sara straightened up, pulling her hair back into a ponytail. She may feel alone, but she sure as hell wasn’t going to show anyone she felt so.

Lunch, it was a horrible affair for those humans who happened to enjoy being alone and unbothered. Not that Phedre hated other people, but she liked her privacy, she liked her silence, and she liked her shadows.

She didn't like her food choices at the moment however. Packing her lunch might not have been the best idea, but it was something she'd always done. Her mother had never had the money for her to get fancy school lunches, so it had been sandwiches and capri sun drinks for Phe.

Holding her navy blue lunch box strap tightly in her hand, Phe began to make her way slowly through the thriving crowd of her classmates. She briefly considered the outdoors option but one look out the windows told her that the sun was going to be rather annoying today. This sight made her produce and pull shadows around her with no conscious thought. It was just something she'd done since she was a child. Sunlight hurt her eyes and made her feel funny, so she used her shadows for what good they could produce, shielding her from the mean old sun.

There! At last, a semi-empty table, this one taken over by graffiti and a girl, about Phedre's age with her pretty hair pulled back in a ponytail. Phedre sighed, she didn't like to intrude on other peoples solitude anymore than she liked to have hers invaded but she desperately needed a place to sit. And this girl, hopefully, wasn't going to turn Phedre's request at a seat down. She'd be quite, she had a book in her lunch box, she could be invisible if that's what the girl wished of her.

Stopping in front of the table Phedre placed a smile on her face and pulled the shadows shrouding her back to where they originated from.

"Hi...do you mind if I sit here? I don't mean to intrude but..." here she looked out and motioned to the other full tables, "there's really no where else for me to go." And she stood, waiting for the girl's response.

Sara turned suddenly as a girl seemed to magically manifest from the air. Sara, slightly confused, looked around her, trying to figure out where she may have materialized from. A moment ago it just looked as if there were shadows, possibly from a cloud creeping over the sun. Then, a girl stood, asking if she could take a seat. The effect was a little unsettling. Before the girl could perceive her sudden surprise as rudeness, Sara gave a curt smile and nodded.

“Uh… sure, you may sit,” Sara replied, her accented voice heavier than she would have liked. “But… uh… the seats, they are not very good.” Sara emphasized the point by gently tapping one that was directly next to her. It made an angry sound and then fell to the floor. “Perhaps you would like to sit there? That one is… how do you say… sturdy, I think.” Sara gestured towards the seat directly across from her. She nudged it with her foot. It stayed fast.

Sara wasn’t exactly sure what to do with the girl. She had had friends before, of course, but she wasn’t very good at making them. Any effort had to come from the opposite party. Sara wasn’t a great conversationalist and had to really strain in order to come up with good conversational topics. Thusly, after she had motions towards the seat in front of her, she stared down at her food. It was her only defense really and one she employed all too frequently, ever since her little… excursion… from home so many years ago.

Sara began poking at her salad, popping a piece of tomato into her mouth. The food was nothing like the cuisine she enjoyed back home, but it would do. She kept sneaking glances at the girl as she ate.

Phedre saw the surprise register on the girl's face and smiled lightly. She always forgot what she looked like to others whilst shrouded in shadows. Sometimes it really made her laugh to see peoples confused expressions when she appeared or disappeared before them, leaving only shadows behind.

Phe smiled in response to the girl's words and laughed aloud as the girl tipped over the bad chair. "Thank you, I'm sure you saved me from a very embarrassing spill onto the floor." She took the sturdy seat and placed her bag on the table in front of her, unzipping the top part and flipping it back to reveal the sandwich inside. She pulled the sandwich out and then the Capri Sun followed soon after. She punched the straw through the top and took a sip.

"I'm sorry if I scared you earlier, I tend to forget when I've got myself hidden. You get so used to it after a while. It tends to startle people however." Phe watched as the girl ate her food and pretended not to be studying Phedre.

This intrigued her, that the girl seemed intent on sneaking glances at her. "Oh, I'm Phedre by the way."

That was it, if the other girl didn't talk, or didn't try to continue the conversation, Phedre would take the hint and just let things lapse into polite silence. If the girl did talk, than Phedre would respond in kind.

Sara gave a small smile and said, “Sara.” She popped another piece of tomato into her mouth and searched for something to say instead of sitting in awkward silence. This girl was literally the first person Sara had talked to at the school and she wasn’t keen on messing it up.

“Um… I am a water manipulator. See?” To prove her statement, Sara used her ability to suck the juice out of the girl’s Capri sun. She made it into the shape of a bird, having it fly around their table twice and then return to its former packet. Sara missed showing off for people. Her sisters used to be delighted in little tricks. It had given her a lot of practice. Though, after her abduction, she had taken to going out at night instead, sometimes one or two of her sisters in tow. She had become rather skilled in her art at these little play sessions. “Animals are my favorite, but I can make other stuff too. Like cyclones and tidal waves, things like that.” Sara normally didn’t like to advertise her more destructive abilities, but she doubted this girl was going to turn her in. After all, she was like her.

“Do you do manipulate light?” Sara had deduced, by the way Phe had just appeared out of nowhere, that she had some ability to bend the light around her. It wasn’t totally unheard of here at Pantheon. Sara had heard about some people who were able to manipulate the very molecules in the air, let alone light.

Sara was curious about which deity this one might be. She was quiet and a bit timid. She must have been some sort of shadowy deity, maybe one that preferred to lurk in the shadows as opposed to putting herself out there like Zeus and the Olympians. However, on her first day here one of the counselors had advised her outright that it was probably a bad idea to ask outright. A few of the students had bad blood and preconceived notions that they should hate other students because of what may have been done in their past lives.

However, Sara wasn’t sure who hated Amphitrite. It would have been odd to find a person who hated her based on her deity.

The girl responded with her own name, in the same beautiful accent as before. Sara, she seemed french, but Phedre couldn't be sure, as she'd never been to France before. Greek accents would be recognizable to Phe in seconds but any other type was a puzzle and Phedre loved puzzles.

She watched in amazement as the girl displayed her power and smiled, that was the one thing Phe loved about this school, everyone had powers that were so amazing. She absolutely loved finding out about them. She'd never considered the fact that some people might not like to be asked about their power, or whom they were the reincarnation of. She'd also never thought about the fact that some problems might arise between the other students based on the interaction between them in another life.

Frankly that would seem silly to Phedre, seeing as no one really knew who and what the gods/goddesses were in those days. Half of the myths were probably made up, most of them by the gods themselves. To trust in myth was to trust in fairy tales, and Phedre liked cold hard logic.

Sara's words made her laugh and Phedre nodded. "Tidal waves would be pretty cool. Though potentially very dangerous." She could see how the girl's powers could have been very troublesome when she was first discovering them, far more troublesome then Phedre's. Phe had just randomly disappeared into shadows on occasion, or caused the sun beating down on her parent's house to disappear. Sara could potentially have caused floods and drownings.

In response to Sara's question about her power Phedre smiled. "Actually it's the opposite. I'm the incarnation of Nyx, she was the goddess of night. So I basically can bend and create shadows, darkness."

Sometimes when thinking about her power, it made Phe believe that she was meant to be evil or something, people always talked about the "dark side" and how that was the bad side. How the light was always the good and the dark was always the bad. It had scared her at first, she thought that one day she was going to go crazy and start trying to kill people, but then she'd realized that it was her choice what she did with her powers, and if she had her way, darkness would become the new light.

But to show her powers more fully, Phedre reached into the darkness under the table and twined a few strands of shadow around her fingers like ribbons. She lifted them up into Sara's view and molded them carefully, turning them into a shield type shape. After this was done, Phedre moved it so that it was hovering between her and the windows blocking the sunlight streaming inside from her eyes.

"Sometimes the light hurts my eyes, I guess it's a downside of this power. As is the constant insomnia. But yeah, that's pretty much what I do. I move around stealthily through shadows and I use them to block the sunlight, kinda like having sunglasses all the time." Phe laughed and allowed the shield to disappear.

"Although, I've thought about it, and it's possible that someday, when my powers are trained enough. I could create shadows big enough to block out the sun. Not that I would ever do that but the thought is pretty satisfying. Also, I could possibly teleport through shadows, since they are everywhere. If I learned how to control it, I could go anywhere." She smiled at the thought, maybe someday she would have it.

"So, you're accent, where are you from?"

“Nyx?” Sara was only vaguely familiar with the gods before the Olympians. Mainly she just thumbed through any mythology books she found until she saw a passage on Amphitrite. There wasn’t really much about her, much to Sara’s disappointment. “A night goddess? That’s pretty impressive. I have not seen anyone manipulate shadows here yet. It would be nice to… teleport?” For a moment she cocked an eyebrow and checked with Phe to make sure she said it right and used it correctly. Since she said nothing, Sara continued, “It would be nice to teleport wherever you wanted to go.”

Sara took of sip of her drink. When Phe asked where she came from, she paused and said, playfully, “My accent? It is you that has the accent, m’amie. I was told by my tutor that I speak perfect English.”

She set her drink down and sort of thought a moment. It was a still a little tough for her to talk about home. She missed it.

“I am from Marseille, in France. It is along the coast, near Spain and Italy. My father was from France, but my mother was from Greece. She never taught us Greek.” She had once asked her mother why she never taught them Greek. Her mother had gotten all haughty and said, “Why should I teach you girls Greek? You live in France. You’re not going to Greece.” Sara had always suspected her mother had had some sort of falling out with her family after she married Sara’s father. It was a family mystery and Sara was pretty sure she’d never find out. She’d yet to meet any of her Greek relatives.

“My father owned a fishing boat and my mother was the daughter of a dock owner. I believe that is how they met. They married very young.” Sara deliberately left out the part where they were both only seventeen and had known each other approximately two weeks. How they hadn’t had a divorce by now was beyond Sara. Luck of the draw, she supposed, Lord knew she never had much luck in that department. “After awhile, my sisters and I were born.”

Sara felt as if she was talking too much. After all, she just met this girl and already she was divulging her family history. “Do you have any siblings? Mother? Father?” Families now a days were often very odd in their dynamics.

Phedra laughed appreciatively of Sara's humor. It was a bit presumptuous of her to say that everyone else had an accent, after all, everyone had an accent, depending on where they happened to be. She knew that from personal experience but she still fell into the habit of asking others about their accents.

But Sara's story of her accent caught Phe's attention and the word 'Greece' made her ears perk up.

"Greece? Really? That's where I grew up, kind of. Half my childhood was there, the other half in New York City."

She'd loved Greece, it was just such a beautiful country. Her parents had lived in Santorini, which was just about as gorgeous as you could get. A lot of her best memories had happened late at night there, most of her talents had been discovered there. However, a lot of her bad memories happened there too. She'd nearly been stoned by some of the neighboring towns older inhabitants.

It was the reason that she and her parents had left Greece. It was Phe's fault.

Focusing on the past was dangerous and pointless, Phe shook her head and turned her mind to answering Sara's question instead.

"No, I happen to be an only child. My parents were terrified to try to have another child after I showed up covered in shadows. I think I might have some cousins out there or something but no immediate family. There might have been...if my dad hadn't..."

She paused and looked down at the table. Just like Sara, she'd begun to rethink telling this much to a stranger, however Sara was pretty much the closest thing Phe had to a friend so far.

"They might have tried to have kids again if my father hadn't gone into a depression and committed suicide."

Phe wasn't sure if Sara would understand the terminology, but she also figured that Sara was pretty smart. She hadn't had too much trouble with the English language so far, apart from seeming to ask Phe's corrections on the word teleport. If need be she'd explain the term, but she'd really rather not have to go into detail about the fact that her father killed himself because it was just too hard having a freak for a daughter.

"My mom never remarried, and she was killed a few years after anyway so it wouldn't really have mattered much if she had."

Phedra looked down at the table. This was usually a conversation ender, but she wasn't going to let it be.

"If it nice having sisters?"

“You spent your childhood in Greece? I have never been there, but my mother was from Ios. She never wanted to visit though. I haven’t met any of my Greek relatives. I do not think they liked my father very much.”

Sara was all too familiar with the concept of suicide. After she had been kidnapped, it was the only thing she could think about. Trying to forget the needles, the prodding, the electrocution, all of it was too hard. Most people would have cracked under such torture only they weren’t trying to get information out of her. They were trying to figure out how her ability worked. They had dehydrated her to the near point of death to see if she could still use her ability. They had attempted to drown her more times than she care to recount. How she escaped was still a mystery to her.

But those months afterwards were hell. She was too scared to leave the house except at night. She would jump at every little thing. Her parents had to practically drag her out of her room in order to get her to bathe or eat dinner with the family. She had considered suicide many times, just to make the horrible memories stop flashing through her head. The school psychiatrist said it was post-traumatic stress syndrome. She called it being cautious.

“Suicide is an unfortunate occurrence, one I am familiar with.” Sara left it at that. She thought the girl was nice and all, but the details of her kidnapping was something she didn’t even share with her parents.

“Murder is another one I am familiar with, perhaps an unnecessary one.” She had killed her ex-boyfriend. Somehow she had sapped the water out of him, dehydrated him until he was nothing but a dry husk of the boy he once was. It had scared her, causing her to run from the house in a panic, fearful she’d be arrested for manslaughter. She wasn’t. How were they going to prove she had drained Jean dry? They couldn’t. Such things were impossible, right?

Sara was aware how strange her comments sounded, but they were both subjects she was wary of speaking about. Only Helene had ever heard the details of Sara’s murder incident. Luckily, she never told anyone out of spite.

“Sisters… they are both a blessing and a curse,” Sara smiled, “I have four. My sister Helene and I are the oldest, twins. I am older by two minutes.” Helene was the polar opposite of Sara in appearance. The blonde, brown eyes girl was the stereotypical blonde beauty, while black-haired blue eyed Sara was the more mysterious looking twin. “The other three are called Elisabeth, Roseline and Natalie. The younger three are… mischievous? They get into much trouble. I once had to save Elisabeth because she fell off the boat in the middle of the sea. It’s how I found my ability.”

Sara paused, contemplating her food a moment. She took a sip of her juice and said, “Helene, she don’t talk to me much anymore. We used to be close, but now she is… how do you say… ignoring me a bit.“
